Markaryd: Hiking Trails and Cultural History

The Hannabadsåsen Nature Reserve has a 690-metre-long hiking trail marked in orange. The glacial ridge has a narrow crest and steep slopes. Its vegetation includes beech forest and mixed forest with beech, oak, birch and spruce. Rönnö offers a different landscape: largely untouched wetlands and old-growth forest with trees around 200 years old define the area.

Hiking Trails and Landscapes

The Rönnö Nature Reserve has two hiking trails, 5 and 6 kilometres long. Conditions may change seasonally, so check them before setting out. Rönnö also has traces of cultural history: moss-covered stone walls and documented house foundations at “Lenas” tell of earlier settlement.

A longer route is the 19.7-kilometre Markaryd–Traryd section of the Nydalaleden. It is part of the S:t Birgittavägarna and follows a pilgrimage route through forests and alongside waterways. The distances therefore vary: 690 metres on Hannabadsåsen, 5 and 6 kilometres in Rönnö, and 19.7 kilometres on the Nydalaleden.

Nearby, east of Traryd, the approximately 4-kilometre Bokelundsrundan is a circular trail through forest terrain and along forest tracks. It includes a Bronze Age burial mound about 9 metres in diameter.

Cultural History in Markaryd

Södergård was also the site of Sweden’s second post office. Another way to experience historic technology is on the preserved railway line between Markaryd and Traryd, which is used for heritage train services and rail biking.
