Sjöared is associated with the Treaty of Knäred and the old national border. This gives the place a clear historical focus for travelers who also want to consider history when choosing a destination. The central theme is the commemoration of the peace agreement of 1613: a memorial stone records the date, while earlier local associations include the inn and the border location. The history can also be explored through the names Sjöared and Sjöaryd, as well as a regional connection to Jönköping City Park.

The Treaty of Knäred and its setting

The Treaty of Knäred brought the Kalmar War of 1611 to 1613 to an end. It was negotiated in Sjöared, on the old national border; the treaty was signed at an inn on January 20, 1613. The inscription on the memorial stone records the place and date: “The Treaty of Knäred was concluded here on January 20, 1613.” The Sjöaredsstenen was erected in 1925 by the Halland Museum. Thus, 1613 and 1925 mark different milestones: the first year denotes the peace agreement, and the second the erection of the memorial stone. The passage of just over three centuries puts the commemoration in context: the stone was not erected at the time of the treaty, but later.

The agreement also included a specific payment. Sweden had to pay Denmark one million reichstalers as the Älvsborg Ransom. This condition adds a concrete treaty provision to the local history and shifts the focus from the place of signing to the agreement itself. For a trip with a historical focus, both the setting and the terms of the peace are therefore relevant.

Inn, border stream, and local tradition

There used to be an inn in Sjöared, in what is now Laholm Municipality. An inn stood by the border stream near Sjöareds å; the peace treaty was signed at this inn on January 20, 1613. In this way, the date of the treaty and the old border location come together in the local history.

Another local tradition concerns the Klumpstenen. According to local tradition, it is the foot of the table on which the peace treaty was signed. The Klumpstenen lies one meter north of the memorial stone in Sjöared. Tables and benches for a coffee break are mentioned alongside the Sjöaredsstenen. Before your visit, check the exact location of the Klumpstenen and whether the tables and benches are still there.

The border history of Sjöared and Sjöaryd

The village of Sjöaryd straddled the border between Småland and Halland; the part of the village with a Halland-inspired name was called Sjöared. The name connects Sjöared with the history of a village that extended across both regions. In the wider regional area around Sjöared, Jönköping City Park has a Ryggåsstuga from the village of Sjöaryd. It probably dates from the 17th century and was moved there in 1904. The dating is a probable attribution; the move to the park is recorded as having taken place in 1904. The building is outside Sjöared, but its origins in Sjöaryd add an architectural connection to the border history. This distinguishes the peace agreement at the border location, the history of the names, and a building associated with Sjöaryd.
