Sandviken offers a range of ways to spend your stay: culture at the Kulturcentrum, events, swimming opportunities and outdoor activities. If you’re looking for a hotel in Sandviken, you can plan your trip around whether you mainly want to experience culture, attend an event or spend time by the lake. The places and activities showcase different sides of the city and its surroundings.

Culture at the Kulturcentrum

The Kulturcentrum is located in the centre of Sandviken. It is a vibrant cultural centre where you can experience and create culture. The Kulturcentrum includes Sandviken Municipality and Folkets Hus, as well as the city library, the school of culture, the Konsthallen art gallery, the Litteraturhuset Trampolin children’s literature centre and several external organisations. These venues and facilities span everything from a library and a school of culture to visual art and children’s literature.

Soundwalk Sandviken combines sound art with a walking tour through parts of the city’s cultural landscape. The sound art installation is permanently set up at the Kulturcentrum; the walk takes 40 minutes. Visitors can borrow headphones and an MP3 player to listen, or play the tour on their own mobile phone. You can choose between borrowing equipment and using your own phone for the same listening experience.

The Konsthallen also offers a regular reason to enjoy a cultural stay: year-round, it presents exhibitions of contemporary art in a variety of aesthetic forms. Guided tours, workshops and cultural events are offered in connection with all exhibitions. The current exhibition may change, so check the latest dates before your visit.

Churches and event venues

The history of Sandvikens kyrka can be traced through two dates: it was built according to plans by Professor Israel Wahirnan, and construction began in 1929. The church was inaugurated on 29 November 1931. The start of construction and the inauguration mark two different stages in its creation.

The Ferrum Arena is located in the Jernvallen area of Sandviken and hosts sports and cultural events. Göransson Arena is a multi-purpose arena for sports and cultural events; it is used for concerts, art exhibitions, trade fairs and conferences. Its event programme thus ranges from sports to various cultural and trade fair formats. If you are travelling for a specific event, check its date and venue.

Cycling routes and nature in the region

Sandviken has a wide selection of cycling routes at different difficulty levels, suitable for beginners as well as competitive cyclists. Route availability may vary; checking current local information can help you plan your ride. For nature and outdoor activities across the wider region, Naturkartan Gästrikland brings together information about the municipalities of Sandviken, Gävle, Ockelbo and Hofors.

The Gästrikeleden is a circular trail through Gästrikland, running from Gysinge via Hofors and Lingbo, between Gävle and Sandviken, and back to Gysinge. The total distance is 270 kilometres, divided into 32 stages of varying lengths. The stages differ in length, so the fact that it is a circular route does not by itself indicate how long any individual section is.

Swimming in the lake and at the water park

Parkbadet offers a water park, a 25-metre swimming pool and whirlpools. The leisure area has slides offering more than 250 metres of sliding fun in total. Parkbadet also has a relaxation area and a fitness centre. Facilities may change; if you are making specific plans, check the latest information about what is available.

Hedåsbadet is a family-friendly swimming spot on Lake Storsjön, offering outdoor recreation close to town. Its listed features include a sandy beach, a bathing jetty, boat moorings and caravan pitches. The swimming options therefore have different focuses: Parkbadet offers pools and whirlpools, while Hedåsbadet is described as a lakeside swimming spot with a beach and bathing jetty.
