Gävleborg between cultural heritage and wilderness
Accommodation in Gävleborg
Gävleborg offers experiences ranging from wilderness, mountains and archipelagos to deep forests and regional cultural heritage. When choosing a hotel, it is worth starting with a question: should your stay be shaped primarily by architectural history, nature observation, hiking trails or seasonal activities? The region brings together very different themes – from historic farmhouses to wetlands and railway collections.
Cultural heritage from farmhouses to railways
The UNESCO World Heritage property Decorated Farmhouses of Hälsingland was added to the World Heritage List in 2012, becoming Sweden’s 15th World Heritage site. Seven Hälsingland farmhouses were selected as representatives of Hälsingland’s building tradition. Many well-preserved homes are distinguished by richly decorated rooms with wall paintings and wallpaper. Of the seven selected World Heritage farmhouses, all except Fågelsjö gammelgård can be visited to varying degrees. Visitor access therefore differs from farmhouse to farmhouse; check the conditions for each one before your visit.
In Gävle, the Järnvägsmuseet is dedicated to Swedish railway history and heritage. It is Sweden’s national museum for this subject. Its collection includes more than 300 vehicles, more than 25,000 objects and almost 500,000 photographs. It also includes Prins August, considered the world’s oldest operational steam locomotive. The Länsmuseet Gävleborg has a different focus: its exhibitions cover Gästrikland and Hälsingland from prehistory to the present. Various events and digital tours complement the offering; the program may change.
The coast also has a cultural side: Gävleborg’s coastal landscape includes fishing villages, lighthouses and small chapels. Gävle is also home to the Gävle Goat, a Swedish Christmas straw goat measuring 13 metres high and seven metres long. It is erected in the city centre from the first Sunday of Advent until after New Year; the dates may vary from year to year.
Forests, wetlands and nature observation
Hamra National Park preserves untouched forests, wetlands and naturally flowing waterways. Trails lead through old-growth forests and moorland landscapes. The park’s natural environment can be experienced on hiking trails, whose conditions may vary by season.
Färnebofjärden National Park offers opportunities for nature observation, canoeing and recreational fishing. All entrances to the national park are designed to be accessible, and the surfaces in the entrance areas are paved. As these are practical details for visitors, it is advisable to check the current arrangements before travelling. At Naturum Färnebofjärden in Gysinge, you can find exhibitions and activities about the nearby natural landscape and national park, as well as maps and hiking tips. Gysinge is a good starting point for hikes and other activities in the national park.
Axmar Nature Reserve covers about 4,500 hectares and is the largest nature reserve in Gävleborg. Activities there include hiking, birdwatching and barbecuing. Axmar Bruk Cultural Reserve was established in 2011 and offers another point of interest for culture enthusiasts.
Trails, coast and seasonal activities
Different routes offer their own highlights. A coastal route passes through a variety of natural environments and offers views of historic buildings, beaches and viewpoints. Stage 13 of the Gästrikeleden runs along the Dalälven and partly over wooden boardwalks. Water levels and weather can affect trail conditions on this stage; check them before setting out on a hike.
Activities also vary depending on the place and time of year. Högbo Bruk is a lively historic ironworks area with origins in the 1630s. Guided tours cover the history, buildings and events of the area; check their availability in advance. Trails and tracks at Högbo Bruk are suitable for hiking, paddling, cycling and skiing, although conditions may vary by season.
In Ockelbo, Wij Trädgårdar combines modern garden design with the surrounding forest and agricultural landscape. The modern garden park is located in a forest clearing and offers guided tours. Seasonal opening hours and tour dates may vary. For winter sports, Kungsberget offers downhill skiing on 25 slopes served by 16 lifts; check current operating conditions before visiting. The Hemlingby outdoor recreation area includes, among other things, a snow park, cross-country ski trails, barbecue areas, rest shelters and a nature trail. Facilities and seasonal preparation may change.
