River landscapes, hiking trails and cultural attractions offer different ways to experience Ljusdal. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you want to spend more time outdoors, visit historic sites or combine both. Specific route lengths, elevation gains and seasonal offerings can help you plan each day to suit your interests.

Hiking trails and river landscapes

The Mellanljusnan Nature Reserve encompasses a 24-kilometre stretch of the Ljusnan between Laforsen and Korskrogen that remains free-flowing, as well as adjacent forest areas. Free-flowing rapids, landforms shaped by the river and inland ice, and a rich variety of flora and fauna define the area. Marked hiking trails run along both sides of the river, with rest areas and shelters complementing the trail network. The six access points have information boards, parking and rest areas, as well as a campsite and shelters. After significant weather events, it is worth checking local visitor information.

The routes around Färila and Laforsen also differ in their courses. The Helgonleden is a pilgrimage trail from Uppland towards Nidaros, now Trondheim; from Färila, it follows the south bank of the Ljusnan. The Flottarstigen runs from Färila to Laforsen, also along the south bank. It shares part of its route with the Helgonleden and passes mostly through the Mellanljusnan Nature Reserve. Near Hoppströmmen, a wooden boardwalk along the Flottarstigen is also suitable for wheelchair users. Check trail conditions before planning your trip.

The hiking trail in the Ramsjö area is about 12 kilometres long and has two starting points with parking. The information for Järvsöklack offers another point of reference: from the nature reserve car park, a 1,350-metre trail leads to the summit, with 200 metres of elevation gain. From the top, the view stretches far across the Ljusnan valley. The distance and elevation gain give you a basis for comparing this hike with the longer trails in the area.

Historic farmsteads, museums and art

Fågelsjö Gammelgård, also known as Bortom Åa, is one of seven Hälsingland farmhouses added to the UNESCO World Heritage List on 1 July 2012. Fågelsjö lies in the border region between Hälsingland, Dalarna and Härjedalen. Guided tours focus on the preserved historic buildings, including the old gun workshop, the servants’ quarters and the storehouse with seven locks. Tours are offered seasonally; check the current schedule in advance.

Loos Cobalt Mine combines a working-life museum with insights into mining history. The museum offers various types of guided tours throughout the year; availability may vary by season. The two wings of the mine building house a historical exhibition and a mineral collection. A visit lets you explore both the history of working life and the rocks on display.

Stenegård is a historic farmstead where culture, gardens, food and people come together. Experiences, events and creative activities are available there year-round. Historic and garden tours run seasonally, while group tours can be booked year-round. At Stenegård, the Lill-Babs Museum offers an insight into Lill-Babs’s life and work through texts, photographs and objects.

Ljusdalsbygdens Museum offers a wide-ranging exhibition programme with an educational focus. Its facilities include a weaving room and Slöjdverkstan, an educational craft programme for children and young people. Opening times and opportunities to take part may vary. Ljusdal itself has numerous public artworks: murals in the area around Bagargränd put the town on the street-art map, while other works can be found in the Slotteområdet and the Gärdeåsen residential area.

Cycling, cross-country skiing and orienteering

For mountain biking, Cykla Järvsö offers more than 30 kilometres of trails laid out safely and sustainably through the forest. There are 42 trails in total, for different experience levels. As the trail network may change, check the current conditions before riding. A seasonal alternative is cross-country skiing in Harsa: when the entire trail system is open, up to 85 kilometres of groomed trails are available. Check opening and snow conditions before travelling.

Smaller points of interest can also help you plan your day. Vildriket is just under a kilometre’s walk from Järvsö station, and a wooden boardwalk there leads through a natural woodland landscape. The municipal tourist information office provides information about the entire municipality of Ljusdal year-round and is located in the old station building in Järvsö. Naturkartan can help you find nature reserves, hiking trails, cycling routes and national parks in the municipality. This lets you tailor your choices to the activities that matter for your stay.
