Korskrogen: River Landscape and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Korskrogen
Korskrogen is five kilometres west of Färila and 21 kilometres west of Ljusdal. These two places give you geographic context for planning your trip. The focus in Korskrogen and the surrounding area is on river landscapes, protected areas, a hiking trail, and the history of Lassekrog. When choosing a destination, you can therefore consider both nature and waterways as well as cultural history.
River Landscape and Protected Areas
The Mellanljusnan Nature Reserve covers a 24-kilometre unregulated stretch of the Ljusnan River between Laforsen and Korskrogen, as well as part of the surrounding forest. The Mellanljusnan Korskrogen–Edeforsen Natura 2000 site extends along the Mellanljusnan River from Korskrogen to Edeforsen. The areas have different names and endpoints: one describes the river stretch between Laforsen and Korskrogen, while the other follows the river from Korskrogen to Edeforsen. This distinction helps you locate the two protected areas when planning your trip.
The terrain is also described: a ridge 25 to 30 metres high, with steep sides, follows the eastern valley slope at Korskrogen. Together with the information about the river and forest, this gives a picture of a landscape with varied features rather than just a single stretch of water.
Trails, Fishing, and Getting Around
In the area around Korskrogen, the Ljusnanleden hiking trail runs along the northeastern side of the river. If you include the trail in your plans, check current trail conditions and information about facilities; these may change.
The Ljusnan corridor near Korskrogen, which is used for fishing, includes 40 kilometres of flowing water and calm stretches of still water between Laforsen and Ljusdal. The description therefore covers both types of water. Before fishing, check the applicable rules and water conditions, as these may also change.
For additional information at the municipal level, the Ljusdal Municipality Naturkartan lists nature reserves, hiking trails, cycling routes, and national parks. The platform also provides accessibility information, including for strollers and people with disabilities, as well as contact details for the responsible managers. If accessibility is important to your plans, check the details for the specific listing and contact the managers named there if you have questions.
To reach Stora Korpimäki Nature Reserve, turn off Route 84 onto Route 310 at Korskrogen. Since road conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before travelling. This information adds a specific nearby destination to the topics of nature and trails.
Lassekrog: Travel History and Forest Life
Lassekrog Inn was built in 1671. For centuries, it served as an overnight stop for carters, their horses, and other travellers. The inn was relocated and restored in the 1960s due to roadworks, and reopened in August 1963. Its history therefore encompasses both its former use by travellers and a later change of location.
Albert Viksten conceived the Kojby in Lassekrog as a cultural-historical monument to living conditions in the forests of the past. It was completed in September 1966. The Kojby includes reconstructed buildings associated with charcoal burning, forestry work, and log driving. The inn and the Kojby therefore represent different historical themes: one relates to travel and overnight stays, the other to living and working in the forest.
The dates also refer to different events: 1671 marks the construction of the inn, August 1963 its reopening after relocation and restoration, and September 1966 the completion of the Kojby. When comparing nature and history, you can thus take the river landscape and trails on the one hand, and the two distinct cultural heritage themes on the other, into account in your travel plans.
