Bergvik: Hiking and Industrial Heritage
Accommodation in Bergvik
Bergvik can be explored through a range of interests: Bergviks udde offers hiking and nature experiences, Bergviks kyrka showcases architectural history, and the Bergviks Industrimuseum tells the story of the sulfite mill. There are also bodies of water that differ geographically, as well as the Badkullen swimming area. This selection gives your trip different points of focus—from outdoor trails to church architecture and industrial history.
Hiking at Bergviks udde and Långnäsudden
Bergviks udde is a popular recreational area, used mainly for hiking and nature experiences. From the car park, a marked trail leads along walkways and wooden boardwalks to Bergviks udde. There, a footpath loops around the entire headland. For planning purposes, the outing can be divided into two sections: the marked approach leads to the udde, while the footpath goes around the headland. You can therefore think of them as two distinct parts of the same visit.
Another nature destination is the Långnäsudden Nature Reserve, five kilometres southwest of Bergvik. It is a separate destination outside Bergvik. Hiking trails there pass through lush deciduous forest, with diverse plant life and abundant birdlife shaping the natural environment. In comparison, Bergviks udde is described in terms of its marked approach and the path around the headland, while Långnäsudden is characterised by deciduous forest, plant life and birdlife. When choosing between the hiking destinations, you can take their different natural features and trails into account.
Church architecture and industrial history
Bergviks kyrka stands on Lake Bergviken and was inaugurated in 1915. Its architecture combines Art Nouveau and National Romanticism, and the church is exceptionally well preserved, both inside and out. This brings together a specific year of inauguration and two distinct architectural styles. For those interested in cultural history, the church offers a focus distinct from the nature destinations of Bergviks udde and Långnäsudden.
The Bergviks Industrimuseum presents the history of the sulfite mill, which began operating in Bergvik in 1874. Bergvik was home to the world’s first sulfite mill. The museum guide from 2018 also notes that the steam locomotive Tyr has been located at the Bergviks Industrimuseum since 1976. The church and museum offer different points of focus: the kyrka centres on architectural style and its year of inauguration, while the museum focuses on the history of the sulfite mill and the steam locomotive located there.
Lakes, river and swimming area
The Ljusnan River flows through Bergvik. The lakes Bergviken and Marmen lie on opposite sides of the town: Bergviken to the west and Marmen to the east. Bergviks kyrka stands on Lake Bergviken, where you can go paddling in the Söderhamn area. For orientation, it is therefore helpful to distinguish between the river and the lakes: the paddling information refers to Bergviken, while Marmen can be identified by its location east of Bergvik.
The access point to the Badkullen swimming area in Bergvik is to the right of the power station, opposite the museum. The swimming area is a few hundred metres farther along, to the left of the gravel road. As local road conditions may change, check the directions before your visit.
Camping in Bergvik
Bergviksparken offers basic campsites for caravans and motorhomes, with or without an electrical hookup. For travellers with their own camping vehicle, the electrical hookup is a specific difference between the available pitches.
