Accommodation in Hammarby
If you’re looking for a hotel in Hammarby, you can choose based on what interests you about the area: industrial history, waterside scenery, parks or outdoor activities. One of Hammarby’s most distinctive features is its connection with the Gavelhytteån. Other attractions include the tree trail in Bruksparken, the running track in Hammarbyheden and the local museum, each appealing to different interests.
Industrial history and architecture
Hammarby Bruk has its origins in an old ironworks dating back to the 16th century. Its architectural development did not end in this early period: the older industrial buildings were joined by architecture from the 1950s, designed by Ralph Erskine. The works’ early roots thus stand alongside a distinctly later architectural addition. The old industrial setting around the Gavelhytteån is considered to be of national interest for cultural heritage conservation. This designation also takes the surroundings of the works into account when considering its history.
To find your bearings by the water, it helps to distinguish between the waterways: the Hammarbyån flows through Hammarby from Ältebosjön in the west into the Gavelhytteån. The latter’s watercourse was crucial to the development of the ironworks. The two river names therefore have different roles in the area’s history: the Hammarbyån describes a route through the area, while the Gavelhytteån is connected with the development of the works.
Bruksparken and the running track
Bruksparken is an English-style park on Ältebosjön. It has a tree trail featuring 22 different deciduous trees. You can borrow the accompanying small brochure from a box at the information board by the bridge from Petres väg. Planning to follow the trail also gives you a specific landmark for finding the brochure. Check on site whether it is available.
Hammarbyheden offers something different: this recreational area has a floodlit running track that is open year-round. If you’d like to fit in some exercise during your stay, you can include the track as a separate activity. Check its current condition on site.
Swimming area and visiting conditions
Jungfruholmens badplats is on the small island of Jungfruholmen in Ältebosjön. Swimming is prohibited at the pier by Jungfruholmen for all of 2026 due to safety issues. The closure applies to swimming at the pier in question and is in effect throughout the 2026 calendar year.
Hammarby kapell is not open daily; you must contact the caretaker to visit. Take this requirement into account when planning your visit.
Gamla Stenhuset in Gästrike Hammarby
Gamla Stenhuset is one of the oldest houses in Gästrike Hammarby and is among the museums listed by Sandviken Municipality. The house has a portrait collection, an archive and exhibitions on Hammarby’s history. Alongside industrial history, portraits, the archive and exhibitions offer specific ways to explore the area’s past. If you’d like to visit the house, check current visiting arrangements in advance.
