Österfärnebo brings together several travel interests rooted in specific features: archaeological traces, historic buildings, church architecture, and experiences by the water. When deciding what to visit, you can choose whether to focus on a burial ground, preserved buildings, or the form of a church. The landscape and water offer another focus, with a bathing area, a national park, and cycling tours providing different ways to explore them.

Landscape, Water, and Outdoor Activities

Österfärnebo’s landscape is shaped by the interplay between the pine forests on the eskers and the waters of the Dalälven. Edsviken is a bathing area on the Dalälven, near Färnebofjärden Camping. You can explore Färnebofjärden National Park in your own boat or rent one from a park partner. For planning, we recommend consulting the national park’s current visitor information. The bathing area and boat exploration offer different ways to enjoy the water: one is a specific place on the river, while the other is a way to explore the national park by boat. Several cycling tours are recommended for Österfärnebo. The PDF maps are no longer updated, so check for current route information before setting out.

Archaeological Traces and Historic Buildings

Hamre gravfält is bordered by Färnebofjärden on one side and Hamrefjärden on the other. It is considered Gästrikland’s largest burial ground and contains about 200 graves; seven graves are visible today. The figure of about 200 refers to the size of the burial ground, while the seven visible graves are the portion that can be seen today. If you are more interested in historic buildings than archaeological traces, Koversta Gammelby offers a different focus. Its authentic 18th-century buildings are well preserved. The distinction is clear when choosing what to see: Hamre represents archaeological traces and visible graves, while Koversta represents preserved buildings.

Church Architecture and Views

The present, larger Österfärnebo kyrka was built between 1819 and 1822 in the neoclassical style typical of the period, replacing the older church. Its design is symmetrical: the tower stands to the west, while the chancel and sacristy are to the east. Neoclassical style and symmetry are two distinct points of reference: the style describes the church’s architectural classification, while the cardinal directions specify the arrangement of the tower, chancel, and sacristy. Compared with Koversta’s 18th-century buildings, the church represents a later, 19th-century building phase. Svär-Gustavs bon is also a summer pasture hut at Fängsjön. From there, the church is visible on the opposite shore of the lake. For travelers interested in how landmarks relate to the landscape, this view across the lake offers a different perspective from the building’s architectural form itself.
