Årsunda: Cultural History and Nature
Accommodation in Årsunda
Årsunda offers cultural history and nature for a range of travel plans. The living archaeological open-air museum Årsjögård, Sörbygravfältet and the church provide historical highlights; the Sjöslingan, the Årsunda Natura 2000 site, and beach and winter activities complete the picture. If you are planning a stay, the different highlights and time estimates can help you choose.
Cultural history in Årsunda
Årsjögård is a living archaeological open-air museum. A one-hour guided tour around the site includes, among other things, the longhouse’s feast hall, the farm’s runestones and the ironworking site. The tour focuses on specific architectural and craft-related aspects. Booking details for current tours may change; it is best to check them before making plans.
Sörbygravfältet is in the centre of Årsunda, on Årsundaåsen, along the road that runs through Årsunda. It comprises at least 90 graves from the late Iron Age and is the largest burial ground in Gästrikland. A one-hour guided tour around the site covers burial customs, excavations carried out there, beliefs, everyday life and the important ironworking industry. Booking details may change here, too.
Both guided tours last one hour, but focus on different things: Årsjögård highlights the farm’s structures, while the tour at Sörbygravfältet covers burial customs and other aspects of beliefs and everyday life. You can choose based on whether you would like to learn more about the individual features of a farm or about the lives and beliefs of people at the time.
Årsunda Church is another historical landmark. Its origins and history date back to the 13th century. The church’s present form dates from around the 1450s. These two dates distinguish its early history from the creation of its present-day form.
Nature, trails and water
The Sjöslingan can be started at Årsunda hembygdsgård. It is about 3.5 kilometres long and takes approximately an hour and a half if you stop at every point. This makes it possible to compare the time required with the one-hour guided tours: allow about half an hour more for the trail if stopping at every point. The duration is an estimate and applies under the stated condition.
The Årsunda Natura 2000 site includes species-rich grasslands with dry meadow vegetation. The areas are also notable for their long history of continued management. These features give the nature reserve a different focus from the historical destinations: here, the emphasis is on grassland vegetation and its long-term management.
Årsunda Strandbad has a two-kilometre sandy beach with shallow water and is suitable for families. Beach conditions and facilities may vary by season. Keep this in mind when planning, particularly if your stay is focused on the beach.
Seasonal activities
In summer 2026, during two weeks of its visitor opening period, Årsjögård offered storytelling, fire-making demonstrations, and games and combat. There were also demonstrations of Viking clothing, fabrics and jewellery. The programme combines storytelling and visual displays with a range of activities; this information refers to summer 2026.
In winter, a 15-kilometre skating trail is available on Lake Storsjön, starting at the beach baths in Årsunda. Whether the trail is open depends on the weather and ice conditions. Check these conditions before setting off. This winter activity differs from the guided tours and the Sjöslingan, whose time estimates are independent of ice conditions.
