A Igrexa has a clear connection to hiking: one route leads to Mirador Alto do Cotro, while the parish church of Campolongo is nearby. The landscape views and architecture offer different points of interest when planning a trip. Along the route, views, stream banks and waterfalls meet named cultural sites; the church, meanwhile, can be understood through its floor plan, façade and bell gable.

Hiking route to Mirador Alto do Cotro

A hiking route to Mirador Alto do Cotro begins at the church esplanade in A Igrexa, in the municipality of Negreira. Parking is indicated at the starting point; check its availability before travelling. Routes and trail conditions can change, so check both before setting out.

From Mirador Alto do Cotro, the view extends to the Tambre estuary and the outlet of the Noia estuary. On a clear day, the rooftops of A Cidade da Cultura are also visible. The estuaries shape the landscape view; the rooftops add to it only when visibility is clear.

Waterways and named stops

The route descends along the banks of Rego do Vao da Denociña and reaches the Santa Leocadia waterfall. Conditions at this waterfall can vary seasonally. On the climb to Chacín waterfall, the route passes through Santa Baia. After crossing the river, it leads to the chapel of Santa Leocadia and San Blas; access conditions can change.

Here, Santa Leocadia refers both to a waterfall and to a chapel, while Chacín is another waterfall. The viewpoint brings together views of two estuary areas; the stream banks and waterfalls provide individual waterside stops, while the chapel offers a cultural counterpoint.

Parish church of Campolongo

The parish church of Campolongo is located near A Igrexa. It is considered to have a medieval character; its exact construction date is unknown. It has a rectangular floor plan, and the main nave has a gabled roof. The simple façade features a wooden entrance door and a rectangular window. There is no bell tower; instead, the church has a simple bell gable with one bell.

A gabled roof has two sloping sides that meet at the ridge. The bell gable holds the bell without forming a tower. The roof shape and bell structure can therefore be considered distinct details of the exterior design.

Campolongo in the festival calendar

A Igrexa belongs to Campolongo (Santa Cruz). The municipal festival calendar lists the Virxe do Carmen celebration in Campolongo on 2 September. If you would like to plan your trip around this date, check the festival details in advance.
