A Baña offers several clearly distinct highlights to help you plan your trip: paths to mills and along rivers, pilgrim routes, churches built in different periods, and archaeological remains. Information on length and difficulty makes some hiking options easy to compare. Other routes focus on a particular destination, a viewpoint or a literary connection.

Hiking Trails and Route Profiles

The Ruta dos Muíños da Baña is a 7.5-kilometre circular trail of moderate difficulty along the River Faílde. Along the way, it passes nine traditional Galician mills. For comparison, the Ruta da Ribeira do Tambre is five kilometres long, rated easy and follows the riverbank. It is therefore 2.5 kilometres shorter, and the stated difficulty levels also differ. Both trails offer clear points of comparison if you would like to include hiking and riverside scenery in your travel plans.

The Ruta de Santa Mariña centres on a destination: it ends at the summit of Santa Mariña. The route offers a 360-degree panorama stretching from Pico Sacro to the Pindo and Iroite mountains. The Ruta “As rapazas de Xan” has a literary connection. This 7.5-kilometre circular trail passes through places depicted in Manuel Iglesias Turnes’s book of the same name. It is therefore the same stated length as the Ruta dos Muíños, but has a different thematic focus. A Baña also has two signposted, permanent mountain biking routes.

Pilgrim Routes Through A Baña

The Camino de Santiago from Santiago to Muxía via Brandomil is 86 kilometres long and passes through A Baña. Those who follow it and collect stamps at the places they pass through can receive the “Muxiá” certificate. A signposted section of the Vía Mariana Luso Galaica runs between Ponte Maceira in Negreira and Trece in A Baña. Within A Baña, this route passes the pilgrimage sites of Seilán and Ordoeste.

Churches, Architectural History and Archaeological Remains

The churches in A Baña represent different building periods and styles. The Capela de San Salvador da Baña is neoclassical in design and simply decorated; it may have been built in the 18th century. The Igrexa de San Mamede de Suevos was built from 1767 onwards and completed with the sacristy in the 19th century. The Igrexa Parroquial de Santa Baia de Lañas is older: it was built in the second half of the 12th century and remodelled in the 18th century.

The church of San Cibrán de Barcala has a freestanding bell tower and is set in an oak woodland surrounded by hundred-year-old oak trees. The church of Santa María de Ordoeste is Baroque, while its tower is neoclassical. The Pazo de Leis dates from the 16th century and is in good condition. Archaeological traces are also part of the cultural heritage: there are petroglyphs in the villages of Carballeira and Ferreiros, and a group of Mámoas in Ferreiros as well.

Festa da Filloa da Pedra

The Feira-Festa da Filloa da Pedra has been held in A Baña in March since 2004. It brings together gastronomy, culture and tradition. The festival thus adds a regular seasonal date to the hiking and cultural highlights when planning a trip. If this date is important for your trip, check the latest event details.
