Oleiros combines a distinctive coastal landscape with walking trails, historic sites and opportunities to experience local culture. If you are looking for a hotel in Oleiros, you can start by considering whether the coast and nature, walks or cultural sites will be the main focus of your stay. The places and routes below offer different options to help you decide.

Dexo-Serantes Coast and Aula do Mar

The Dexo-Serantes Coast Natural Monument stretches for 11 kilometres from the Mera Lighthouse to the Port of Lorbé. The coastal area was declared a natural monument in 2000 and added to the Galician Network of Protected Natural Areas. It is also part of the Natura 2000 network as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC). Visitors can observe native birds and plants here; hiking is another way to experience the area.

The Aula do Mar Visitor Information Centre is a useful starting point for visitors. It is housed in a former lighthouse keeper’s house on the Costa de Dexo, which was converted into the Aula do Mar. There, you can learn about the coastal ecosystems and plan routes. A permanent interpretive exhibition focuses on the Dexo-Serantes Coast. Information is also available on how to behave in the natural monument and on the walking trails that pass through the area.

Walking trails with different starting points

The Seixo Branco-Furnas route is 3.6 kilometres long, takes 90 minutes and is of moderate difficulty. It starts and ends in Canabal. This route therefore has both a stated duration and the same start and end point. The Porto de Dexo route, by contrast, starts and ends at the Church of Santa MarĂa de Dexo. For the Faros de Mera route, the start and end point is the Aula do Mar Visitor Information Centre.

The Senda Litoral Mera runs along the waterfront in Mera. Interpretive signs explain the area’s biological, geographical and ethnographic importance. The Sendero Costa Libre covers the coastal stretch from Santa Cristina to Santa Cruz. The routes described therefore differ not only in their starting points: the length, duration and difficulty are given for Seixo Branco-Furnas, while the other routes are described here by their starting points or course. Before planning, check which of these details is relevant to your outing.

Historic sites and local culture

Santa Cruz Castle stands on a small island connected to the Port of Santa Cruz by a footbridge. Its construction was commissioned in the 16th century after the English Armada led by Sir Francis Drake attacked the Port of A Coruña; the fortress was intended to strengthen the city’s defence system. The castle’s ground floor currently houses two municipal exhibition halls.

The Os Oleiros Museum is located in As Torres de Santa Cruz, also known as Pazo do Coruxo. Its collection comes from more than 150 different pottery workshops. Pazo do Coruxo is designated as an Asset of Cultural Interest; its origins date back to the 17th century. The Church of Santa MarĂa de Dexo also offers a historic landmark: its origins date back to 1108. In the garden of Pazo de Xaz, geometric patterns made from myrtle and a stone sundial define the French garden style.

Walks, kayaking and a mussel festival

The garden at A Capela is a good place for a walk. Paths wind through lush vegetation and beneath the ruins of the old Pazo de A Capela. Kayak trips are available along Mera Beach. The two options offer different experiences: one centres on the garden and its ruins, while the other is an activity along the beach.

Lorbé is also associated with a recurring culinary event. The gastronomic mussel festival takes place in early August during the Carme festivities and attracts hundreds of visitors every year. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the specific event dates. To find your way to the Costa de Dexo, travel from A Coruña via A Ponte Pasaxe in the direction of Santa Cruz and the beaches. In Mera, you can turn off towards the lighthouse or continue to the Port of Lorbé.
