Mera: Discover the Beach and Coastal Landscape
Accommodation in Mera
Mera brings together a beach, coastal paths, and protected landscapes, along with a distinctive architectural theme. Mera Beach is 520 meters long; it is known for its crystal-clear water and golden sand. A wooden walkway connects it to nearby Espiñeiro Beach. Stand-up paddleboarding is available at Mera Beach, where boards can be rented. Rental availability may vary seasonally. The clear, calm waters at Mera and Espiñeiro beaches are suitable for kayaking. Before setting out, check local sea conditions and, if you plan to rent a board, availability for your travel dates.
Beach, Relaxation, and Activities
Across from Mera Beach is A Lagoa, a recreational area. Every spring, Mera hosts a triathlon featuring running, cycling, and swimming; events take place along the beachfront promenade and in the area around A Lagoa Park. If you would like to plan your trip around the triathlon, check the specific event dates.
Coastal Path and Natural Monument
The Senda Litoral Mera runs along Mera’s coastline and features interpretive signs. The route between Canide and the Aula do Mar is 3 kilometers long and takes about 45 minutes; it is classed as easy. The approximate time estimate can help you fit the walk into your day. Before setting out, check local trail conditions and signage. The Aula do Mar serves as a visitor reception center for the Costa de Dexo-Serantes Natural Monument and houses a permanent exhibition introducing visitors to the monument.
The Costa de Dexo-Serantes Natural Monument extends for 11 kilometers between the Mera lighthouses and the port of Lorbé. It has been designated a Natural Monument since 2000 and is part of the Natura 2000 network as a Special Area of Conservation (ZEC). Along the Costa de Dexo-Serantes, you can admire cliffs, watch birds, and go hiking. The Mera lighthouse offers a viewpoint overlooking the Atlantic horizon, from which the mouths of three rías are visible. The Senda Litoral Mera is a specific route; the 11 kilometers, by contrast, refer to the extent of the Natural Monument.
Architecture and Sports
Another point of interest is Casa do Arxentino, a 19th-century residence in Mera built in the historicist style. The building features a stone arcaded courtyard and floral decoration made of ceramic tiles on the cornice. The tile decoration is influenced by elements of Andalusian or Portuguese historicism. For architecture enthusiasts, the house offers a distinct focus alongside the beach and nature: the interplay of form, materials, and ornament.
Rowing training is also available, from beginner sessions to preparation for competition level. It is offered from Mera and Santa Cristina beaches. Alongside water-based activities, visitors can therefore choose training opportunities with different sporting goals.
