Laxe: Coastal Landscape and Maritime History
Accommodation in Laxe
A hotel stay in Laxe can be planned around your travel interests: the coastal landscape, fishing, architecture and an annual commemorative event offer different themes to explore. The key is deciding which of them matters to you when choosing your destination. Laxe Beach is known for its fine white sand within the ria; the harbor is a place of fishing and maritime work, while Santa María da Atalaia combines historic architecture with the defense of the harbor.
Coast and Natural Environment
Laxe Beach lies sheltered within the ria and is distinguished by its particularly fine, white sand. The natural area of Traba includes an almost two-kilometer-long beach between Punta de Arnado and Punta de Traba, a dune belt and a natural lagoon. The two coastal descriptions emphasize different features: at Laxe, the beach is defined by its sheltered location and sand, while at Traba, dunes and a lagoon are part of the landscape alongside the beach.
The natural area of Traba is designated as a protected natural area of the Traba lagoon and dunes, forms part of the Natura 2000 network, and is recognized as a Special Protection Area (SPA) and a Site of Community Importance (SCI). Thus, alongside the beach landscape, Traba’s designated protected status is also a key feature.
Architecture and History
The Church of Santa María da Atalaia is largely designed in the Gothic maritime style and was extended at the end of the 15th century. Its atrium served as a watchtower and for the defense of the harbor, combining an architectural style with a maritime function. The church has a single-nave hall plan, and the main chapel is covered by a rib vault. The terms refer to different features: the hall plan describes the layout of the church interior, while the rib vault describes the structure above the main chapel.
The Casa do Arco was built in the 15th century by Doña Urraca de Moscoso, Countess of Altamira, and her second husband, Don Pedro de Osorio. This brings two historical perspectives together: Santa María combines architecture with the defense of the harbor, while the construction history of the Casa do Arco is linked to two named figures from the 15th century.
Harbor and Fishing
From the harbor of Laxe, you can enjoy views of the beach and the town. You can also observe the daily work of the fishermen, boats coming in and the auction of the day’s catch. The fishing fleet’s daily catch is unloaded at the harbor for sale through the fish auction hall. The “Con X de Laxe, con X de Peixe” campaign promotes fish with an X in their names as a local gastronomic specialty.
Commemorative Event and Surfing
The maritime commemorative event El Naufragio takes place every year on August 17 and has been held since it was first introduced in 1962. If you are planning your trip around this tradition, plan for the set date and check the event information for the year you are visiting.
At Soesto Beach, the strong tidal exposure makes it suitable for surfing year-round. People of different ages and skill levels surf there. The timing of these activities therefore differs: El Naufragio is tied to an annual commemorative date, while surfing at Soesto Beach is possible throughout the year.
