If you are considering Cambre for your hotel stay, it helps to look at the destination’s different themes: these include Romanesque architecture, prehistoric rock art, pilgrimage history and river routes. You can base your choice on whether you are particularly interested in architectural styles, historical traces or landscapes. Each attraction and trail has its own distinctive character.

Architecture from different centuries

Santa María de Cambre is in the center and is a representative 12th-century Galician Romanesque church. It is classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural. Its floor plan is shaped like a Latin cross; it also has three naves and an ambulatory with five chapels. These details give the church a distinctive architectural profile and make it a notable feature for a stay focused on Romanesque architecture.

The Pazo de Anceis offers a different perspective. This manor complex, built in the 18th century, has a U-shaped layout and includes a chapel, a monumental coat of arms and an ornamental pond. This brings two distinct types of buildings together: Santa MarĂa is a Romanesque church, while the Pazo is described as a multi-part manor complex. If you are interested in historic architecture, this contrast offers a useful starting point for choosing a theme.

Cambre’s built heritage also includes traces of its industrial past. A large, bottle-shaped kiln built of bricks survives at the Telleira de Prego. It is located beside the path and Ponte Noceiro. This monument centers on the kiln’s material and distinctive shape—a different approach to architectural history from the church and manor complex.

Rock art and pilgrimage history

The A Pena da Nosa Señora petroglyph consists of cup-marked areas and engravings generally attributed to the Atlantic Bronze Age, around 2000 to 1000 BC. From A Pena da Nosa Señora, you can look out over the Ría del Burgo and the estuary of the Río Mero. Here, prehistoric markings meet views of two named bodies of water. This sets the site apart both from the architectural monuments and from the trails along the rivers.

The Camino Inglés, also called the Camino de Faro, passes through Culleredo and reaches Cambre via the parish of Sigrás. The Santiago de Sigrás hospital complex offers a historical perspective on the pilgrimage route: it provided pilgrims from northern Europe with shelter and accommodation along the Camino. Together, the route and the complex reveal two sides of pilgrimage history—the path’s course through Sigrás and the hospital’s former role in welcoming travelers.

Riverside landscapes and trails

The Paseo Fluvial del río Mero is approximately 20 kilometers long. It was created as an ecological restoration project and makes the river’s ecological and ethnographic values accessible to the public. This trail therefore combines a specific length with two perspectives on the river: as a natural environment and as part of human culture.

The Ríos de Cambre route offers another perspective on the rivers. It follows the Mero and its tributaries, the Brexa and San Benito, bringing a network of waterways into focus. The Arredor de Cambre route takes a different approach: it starts in the center of Cambre and follows some of Cambre’s deepest and oldest surviving paths. The routes therefore differ in their themes—river restoration and river culture, multiple waterways, or old surviving paths.

The Embalse de Cecebre adds a habitat for wintering birds, as well as stable populations of mammals, reptiles and amphibians, to the nature themes. While the river routes focus on the courses of waterways or paths, the emphasis here is on wildlife and its habitat.
