Sant Rafel: Church, Ceramics and Patron Saint’s Festival
Accommodation in Sant Rafel
Sant Rafel brings together several distinct points of interest to consider when planning a trip: the church, with views of Eivissa and the sea; a ceramics tradition; the patron saint’s festival; and a cycling route through the Ibizan countryside. These themes offer different perspectives on the town: architectural history, craftsmanship, a recurring festival and a route through the landscape.
Church, Architectural History and Views
The church of Sant Rafel was built between 1786 and 1793, shortly after the 1785 decree establishing the parishes of Ibiza. Its construction dates the church to the early phase of parish foundations on the island.
The church stands at a viewpoint and offers excellent views of Eivissa and the sea. Its architectural history is therefore connected to the landscape: the views and location, as well as the historic building, shape the character of this place.
The Sant Rafel de sa Creu ensemble has a radius of 250 metres, with the church of Sant Rafel at its centre. When exploring the ensemble, the church is also its spatial point of reference.
Ceramics Tradition and Craftsmanship
Sant Rafel is the only place on Ibiza designated a “Zona de Interés artesanal” (Area of Craft Interest). Its ceramics tradition includes pieces with Punic-inspired forms. The designation and the forms highlight different aspects: one identifies the town’s artisanal character, while the others give its ceramics a distinctive design.
Carlos Icardi is a historical figure associated with this craft. In 1977, he set up his pottery workshop at his home, Can Ferreret, in Sant Rafel. Icardi was one of the people who spearheaded the designation of Sant Rafel as an artisanal centre under the name “Zona de Interés artesanal”, and he taught pottery classes to several generations. His story links a workshop with efforts to secure the designation and pass on pottery-making skills. The ceramics tradition is thus connected not only to its forms, but also to the history of a craftsperson and teacher.
If design is your main interest, the ceramic forms and Icardi’s story offer a different focus from the church’s construction period and views. Both themes reveal Sant Rafel in their own way: through its artisanal tradition and its townscape.
Patron Saint’s Festival and Cycling Route
The patron saint’s festival of Sant Rafel is an annual occasion, with its main day on 24 October. The festival includes sporting and entertainment activities, though individual events may vary from one year to the next. It also features a ball pagès, a traditional Ibizan dance performed by the Colla de Sant Rafel. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, note the main day and check the programme for that year before travelling.
The “De mercado en mercado” route includes an approximately 9-kilometre cycling tour in the direction of Sant Rafel. It follows quiet country roads through the Ibizan countryside. The approximate distance gives you an idea of the tour’s length; cycling is a different focus from the place-specific themes of the church and ceramics.
The festival and route also differ in their timing: the main day of the patron saint’s festival is 24 October, while the cycling tour is described in terms of its approximate length and the landscape. Depending on the purpose of your trip, you can choose between a set festival date and a route through the island.
