Salt flats, birdlife, and cultural history give Sant Francesc De S'estany a distinctive profile for trip planning. The salt ponds of ses Salines are located in the village; Sant Francesc is also home to the parish church and the salt harbor of sa Canal. Nature watching, salt production, and historic buildings offer different points of interest to consider when choosing your destination.

Salt-flat landscape and birdlife

Flamingos can be seen at the various ponds of ses Salines practically all year round. The period after summer and autumn are considered particularly good times. More than 200 bird species live in the park; some can be observed from viewpoints near the wetlands. A birdwatching platform is located opposite the church of Sant Francesc de s'Estany, next to the monument to the salt workers. Access to the salt ponds is prohibited, but the paths along their edges can be walked. Please observe the local rules in force.

Church, route, and cultural history

The parish church of Sant Francesc de s'Estany is a whitewashed church dating from the 18th century. The Ruta de sa Sal Rossa can also begin here. This makes the church both an 18th-century architectural landmark and the starting point of a named route.

The picturesque salt harbor of sa Canal is also part of Sant Francesc. Sa Caleta is an archaeological site associated with what is believed to have been the first Phoenician city in the Pityuses. Sa Caleta is one of Ibiza's cultural properties that UNESCO declared a World Heritage Site in 1999. The watchtower of sa Sal Rossa is a coastal fortification dating from the 18th century. Together with the parish church, it allows visitors to compare two buildings from the same century: a whitewashed church and a fortification.

An event date from 2024

The Fira de la Sal is also associated with Sant Francesc. The eighth edition was scheduled to take place from October 17 to 20, 2024, in Sant Jordi, Sant Francesc, and other locations in the ses Salines Natural Park. These dates refer to that edition at the time. If you would like to plan a visit around the fair, check current event dates.

Insights into salt and the park landscape

The Centro de Interpretación de Sant Francesc features a salt exhibition with modern images and old tools used for salt production. At the end of the visit, an audiovisual presentation about the park's natural and scenic values, including its marine environment, is shown. The center therefore highlights both salt production and nature, landscape, and the sea.

The center is on road 802 in the direction of ses Salines/sa Canal. It can be reached on foot, by vehicle, by bicycle, or by bus. Ibiza Bus and ALSA routes 11 and 11 B are listed for bus journeys. Check the bus connections before setting out so you can take the listed services and routes into account when planning your trip.
