Accommodation in Ibiza
If you are considering Ibiza as a destination for its cultural history, you will encounter different periods and themes across the city: Renaissance military architecture in Dalt Vila, the city’s history under Muslim rule, the Puig des Molins necropolis and museums. These places offer different ways to explore the past—from a fortified upper town with views to archaeological remains and the broad historical span of a permanent exhibition. As a general guide, Ibiza is easy to explore on foot. When planning your trip, it is helpful to first decide whether you are most interested in architecture and city views, historical interpretation or archaeology.
Dalt Vila: Fortifications and Views
The fortified upper town of Dalt Vila is an outstanding example of Renaissance military architecture. You can walk along the ramparts and enjoy views over the entire city and out to sea. Portal de ses Taules is the main and most impressive entrance to the walled complex. The fortifications, entrance and walk each offer different points of interest if you are interested in the architecture and character of the upper town.
The City’s History at the Centre d’Interpretació Madina Yabisa
The Centre d’Interpretació Madina Yabisa offers a different perspective. There, you can learn about the city’s history, particularly the history of Madina Yabisa under Muslim rule. A large audiovisual model shows how the city developed. You can also visit the interior of a tower from the former Arab fortress, as well as sections of the wall. The centre thus combines historical interpretation with tangible architectural remains.
Puig des Molins: Necropolis of Antiquity
Puig des Molins takes you back to Antiquity: throughout this period, the site served as the cemetery of the city of Ibiza. Around 350 to 400 hypogea are visible from the outside; the total number of tombs is estimated at around 3,000, not including other types of burial. The estimated total therefore refers to tombs, not to 3,000 hypogea. The accessible areas of the necropolis include hypogea open to visitors. The museum provides protective helmets for visitors entering them. As practical visitor information may change, it is advisable to check the museum’s current guidance before your visit.
Museums and Their Historical Perspectives
The history of MACE also offers a distinct cultural connection. The museum grew out of the Ibiza Biennial, which opened in 1964. The organisers intended the award-winning works to form the museum’s initial collection.
The Museo Arqueológico de Ibiza y Formentera covers a different timespan: its permanent exhibition spans more than 3,000 years of history. This gives you a broad historical overview, while the information about Puig des Molins concerns a specific site and its function throughout Antiquity.
Compare Historical Periods
The timeframes differ considerably: Puig des Molins represents Antiquity, Madina Yabisa the city’s history under Muslim rule, and Dalt Vila Renaissance military architecture. The Biennial, which opened in 1964, is part of the history of MACE’s origins; the archaeological museum’s permanent exhibition spans more than 3,000 years. You can therefore choose between a clearly defined historical period and a broad historical overview.
