The municipality offers different points of interest for each of these interests.
Coast, nature and water sports
The municipality has 32 beaches and an 80-kilometre coastline. There are opportunities for water sports along the coast. If you want to make activities on the water a central part of your trip, this provides a clear focus for your planning.
Ses Salines Natural Park is also located within the municipality. The routes through the park feature information about its flora, fauna and history. This allows visitors to learn about the landscape's natural and historical features as they explore it. The Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows off the coast of Sant Josep are also designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Archaeology and history
The settlement of Sa Caleta dates back to the second half of the 8th century BC and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. The Centre d’Interpretació de Sa Caleta presents the Phoenician settlement in a museum setting. Information panels explain how the first inhabitants lived, what customs and rituals they followed, and what navigation and trading systems they used. The centre therefore explores not only the origins of the site but also everyday life and exchange.
Another archaeological highlight is Ses Païsses de Cala d’Hort, a rural Punic-Roman settlement dating from the 5th century BC. It represents a different period from the origins of Sa Caleta and adds to the picture of the municipality's long history.
The coastal defence towers also tell the story of different construction periods. Torre des Carregador was built in the 16th century as part of the coastal defence system and protected the economically important salt-loading operation. Torre de ses Portes is one of Sant Josep's coastal defence towers, built between the 17th and 18th centuries. The two towers therefore represent different periods of coastal defence.
The Església de Sant Josep was completed in 1731. Its façade features the only sundial on a church façade in Ibiza. The church's fittings include an organ with 2,000 pipes, whose sound is inspired by the traditional Ibizan flute. Alongside landmarks like these, the ball pagès, a folk dance tradition, is also part of local culture.
Plan routes and dates
One of the easier routes to Sa Talaia starts at the town hall square in Sant Josep de sa Talaia. The route from the square to the summit is just over 2 kilometres long and takes about an hour and a half. On clear days, the summit offers far-reaching panoramic views across the island. For planning your day, the approximate duration and the clearly defined start and finish points are especially helpful.
Sant Josep's official tourist information office is in the town centre, opposite the town hall. Routes towards sa Talaia start from the tourist information office. This makes it a clearly identifiable point of reference in the town centre for finding your way to the route.
A seasonal event is the Fira de la Sal, held every October in Sant Jordi and Ses Salines d’Eivissa Natural Park. Food and drink are part of its visitor programme. If the event fits your travel plans, check the dates and programme details before visiting.
