Fishing has a long tradition in Lavra at Praia de Angeiras. Woodland and dune areas are part of the area and are considered particularly valuable ecologically; Praia de Angeiras Norte is surrounded by dunes. At the same time, artisanal fishing is not merely a historical memory: it is still practised at the fishing centre at Praia de Angeiras.

Coastal Landscape and Fishing Culture

The Rio Onda forms a natural boundary between Labruge in the municipality of Vila do Conde and Lavra in the municipality of Matosinhos; it flows into the sea at Praia de Angeiras. Nearby, a bridge leads from Praia de Angeiras to Labruge, through the landscape and flora along the Rio Onda. A cycle path in Lavra described in 2023 is 970 metres long. It runs from the roundabout on Rua da Cruz to the junction with Avenida da Praia de Angeiras, alongside the Roman fish-salting tanks. Check the route before setting off.

Casa do Mar e Tanques Romanos in Angeiras is a museum space dedicated to artisanal fishing and occupies a former “Casa do Mar” on Angeiras beach. The “moços de mar” stored boats and equipment for fishing and collecting sargassum and pilado in its buildings. The site at Praia de Angeiras includes 16 replicas of the original Roman fish-salting tanks. The original tanks were carved into the rock and are now covered by beach sand; check the presentation conditions before visiting.

Portinho de Angeiras is also part of this fishing history: its 488-metre-long breakwater is intended to improve safety when boats enter and leave the harbour. Fresh fish caught directly by fishing boats is sold at Mercado Municipal de Angeiras.

Church, Remembrance and Residential Architecture

The first documented mention of Igreja de Lavra dates from 1286. The former church was demolished in 1721; the present building was completed in 1758 and features characteristics of the Joanine Baroque. Obelisco da Memória commemorates the landing of D. Pedro IV and the liberal troops in 1832; the monument was not completed until 1864.

Bairro SAAL at Praia de Angeiras is a housing development built after 25 April. The project began in 1977 and was carried out in two phases: 90 homes were built in the first phase, followed by another 31 in the second. The buildings have a functional design, are arranged in a grid and organised as single-storey modules. This gives the neighbourhood a different architectural point of reference from the church and monument.

Collections and Activities

In the main foyer of Museu da Escola EB2,3 de Lavra, an ethnographic collection displays objects and tools related to the customs and ways of life of the people of Lavra. It also illustrates traditional agriculture, fishing and linen-making—from Roman times to the mid-20th century.

A municipal description, updated on 26 October 2018, lists thematic artisanal training at Casa do Mar, which must be booked at least eight days in advance. Before travelling, confirm whether the activity is taking place and how to book.
