A trip to Lousada offers opportunities to explore nature and architectural history as distinct highlights. Mata de Vilar combines woodland and walking trails, while churches, bridges and Torre de Vilar offer insights into the built heritage. The Centro de Interpretação do Românico complements these sites with an exhibition organized by theme. You can plan your stay around the aspects of the region that interest you most.

Nature and Walking Trails in Lousada

Mata de Vilar is a 14-hectare forest in which more than 70 animal species have been recorded. Visitors can explore it via five signposted trails of varying difficulty. Two trails can be compared in detail by length, duration and route type: Trilho do Miradouro is 425 meters long, linear and rated easy; it takes 15 minutes. Trilho do Medronheiro is a 1,638-meter circular trail of moderate difficulty, with a duration of 45 minutes. This gives you the choice between a short linear route and a longer loop, with different difficulty ratings.

Visits to Mata de Vilar are currently available by prior request for groups and as part of organized events. If you are planning such a visit, submit your request in advance.

Parque MolinolĂłgico e Florestal do Sousa combines technical and landscape features. The site includes seven mills, a water-powered sawmill, a miller's house and three reservoirs. The impoundment basin provides an opportunity to observe migratory and resident birds. The park therefore offers a different way to connect with nature than the trails at Mata de Vilar: here, mills and water are just as central as birdwatching.

Historic Buildings and Romanesque Heritage

The historic sites differ in their architectural forms and historical periods. Mata de Grades preserves a wine press carved into the rock, dating from the late Middle Ages. Torre de Vilar is an example of a fortified noble residence, known as a “domus fortis.” Its construction is thought to date from the second half of the 13th century to the beginning of the 14th century. This dating remains uncertain.

The bridges also have their own distinctive features: Ponte de Vilela has four round arches and displays technical and construction features of the Middle Ages; its precise date is difficult to establish. Ponte da Veiga is a Gothic crossing thought to have been built in the first half of the 15th century. Among the churches, the history of Igreja do Salvador de Aveleda dates back to the 11th or 12th century. The current building of Igreja de Santa Maria de Meinedo dates from the 13th century and bears a stone inscription with the year 1262.

If you prefer to explore architectural history in an exhibition, the Centro de Interpretação do Românico offers about 650 square meters of exhibition space across six thematic rooms. Interactive museographic experiences present the historical and cultural heritage. On March 16, 2025, the center was recognized as a “Museum of Territory.” It is fully accessible to visitors with reduced mobility.

Beyond Lousada, the Rota do Românico places the buildings in a broader cultural tourism context. The project connects Lousada with 58 architectural monuments and three interpretation centers across twelve municipalities in the Sousa, Douro and Tâmega valleys. This regional framework extends beyond individual attractions in Lousada.

Regional Cuisine

Local cuisine offers another point of interest: Basulaque is a dish characteristic of some municipalities in Lousada, particularly Meinedo. It is served there as a starter on feast days and at family celebrations. The tradition is therefore associated with specific municipalities and occasions, rather than being described as a dish typical of the entire region.
