Penalva Do Castelo: Cultural Heritage and Landscape
Accommodation in Penalva Do Castelo
Penalva do Castelo brings together historic landmarks, river landscapes and regional specialities. Its places and themes range from prehistoric monuments and sacred art to winegrowing and apple culture, offering a varied starting point for exploring the municipality according to your own interests.
Cultural history from prehistory to the Baroque
The Casa da Ínsua and the Igreja da Misericórdia are among the municipality’s two outstanding historic landmarks. The Casa da Ínsua is a Baroque manor house commissioned by Luís de Albuquerque de Mello Pereira e Cáceres in the second half of the 18th century, around 1780. Its historic gardens cover 40 hectares and combine a French-style layout with an English garden. The Núcleo Museológico da Casa da Ínsua focuses on Portuguese-Brazilian relations in the 18th century, particularly the work of the patron who commissioned it.
The Igreja da Misericórdia is also one of the area’s prominent landmarks. The Mosteiro de Santo Sepulcro in Trancoselos was the first monastery established in Portugal by the Order of the Holy Sepulchre. In Castelo de Penalva, a Roman bridge crosses the Rio Dão. Esmolfe is home to further archaeological traces: the Anta do Penedo de Com is a prehistoric monument, and the heritage sites mentioned there include anthropomorphic tombs. The area thus offers a view of history stretching from prehistory to 18th-century buildings and art.
Religious art is also preserved at the Núcleo Museológico da Misericórdia de Penalva do Castelo. Its collection includes unique works of sacred art, while the museum also recalls around four centuries of the Santa Casa’s work in the municipality. For a different insight into local traditions, visit the Núcleo Museológico de Sangemil, located on the second floor of the communal bakehouse, where the breadmaking cycle is documented. A visit may also offer the chance to watch bread being made by hand and taste it. Please arrange the details of your visit in advance.
River landscapes and trails
The Rio Dão flows for 21 kilometres through Penalva do Castelo and also shapes its wine landscape: climatic conditions and soil characteristics on its irrigated slopes allow winegrowing. The Rio Dão valley is considered an area of great biological diversity and offers a chance to get close to nature. The Açude dos Cantos is also situated by the river, in a peaceful spot with diverse flora and fauna.
The Trilho de Castendo offers a different way to experience the landscape. It starts in the centre of Penalva do Castelo, next to the pillory, and passes through oak forests, farmland, chestnut groves, vineyards and pine forests.
The Mata da Senhora da Lurdes also brings together natural and religious features: beside the Rio Côja is an artificial grotto carved into the rock, above which stands the Capela da Imaculada Conceição. Near the Mata, beside a former hydroelectric facility, runs a roughly 1,600-metre-long canal made entirely of granite. Another historic facility near Senhora da Ribeira was among the first hydroelectric facilities of its kind in Portugal.
Wine and Maçã Bravo de Esmolfe
Penalva do Castelo lies in the northern part of the Dão wine region, in the Castendo subregion. Alongside winegrowing, the Maçã Bravo de Esmolfe is a defining part of local produce culture. According to tradition, this apple variety originated in the village of Esmolfe around 200 years ago. Its flesh is soft, juicy and sweet, with an intense, distinctive aroma. The harvest begins in the second half of September. When refrigerated, the apples can be kept for four to five months.
