Paredes: Monasteries, Art and Striking Landscapes
Accommodation in Paredes
At Canhão da Senhora do Salto, the Rio Sousa has cut a narrow, deep valley into the quartzite; steep slopes define the landscape. In Paredes, these landforms sit alongside historic monasteries, churches, art and trails. You can choose different focuses for your stay, from architecture and local history to nature and sporting activities.
Churches, Monasteries and Art in Paredes
The Igreja de São Pedro do Mosteiro de Cete has been classified as a Monumento Nacional since 1910 and is part of the Rota do Românico. The church contains the tomb chapel of D. Gonçalo Oveques, richly decorated with Hispano-Moresque polychrome tiles. A cloister connects the former monastery buildings to the church. These three elements—the building, chapel and cloister—offer visitors different points of interest in art and history.
The Igreja de Santo Estêvão and the Mosteiro de Vilela also form a medieval monastic ensemble. It was extensively remodelled in the modern era and is classified as a Monumento de Interesse Público. The present-day Igreja de São Cristóvão de Louredo was built in the 18th century and is also classified as a Monumento de Interesse Público. Its richly ornamented altarpieces belong to the so-called Barroco de Estilo Nacional and stand out for the quality of their carving.
The Núcleo Museológico Padre Amadeu Soares da Silva displays the historical collection of the parish of Louredo across three rooms: the room of the Brotherhood of the Blessed Sacrament, the sacristy and the Passion room. The museum is housed in an outbuilding. Woodworking is another aspect of local heritage: old techniques have been passed down from generation to generation in Paredes. The Palacete da Granja features some Brazilian-influenced details, including a balustrade on the triangular pediment and yellow-and-white high-relief façade tiles from the Massarelos factory.
The Circuito Aberto de Arte Pública comprises 18 works by national and international artists, as well as nine additional temporary installations. As an open-air museum of contemporary art, it is closely connected with the local community and architectural heritage. The Pelourinho de Paredes is also part of the town’s history: it was already mentioned in 1758, next to the former courthouse and prison.
Landscape, Trails and Nature
Paredes is shaped by contrasting landscapes whose forms reflect both geomorphological processes and human influence. At Canhão da Senhora do Salto, the Rio Sousa cuts through hard-wearing quartzite. Its hardness and resistance to erosion have formed the narrow, deep valley with its steep slopes. The Torre do Castelo de Aguiar de Sousa has been converted into a viewpoint. From there, visitors can see the quartzite cliffs of the surrounding mountains, the Levadas waterfalls and the confluence of the Rio Sousa as it flows towards the Douro.
The CISS – Centro de Interpretação da Senhora do Salto is located in the Natura 2000 Site de Valongo, designated as a Zona Especial de Conservação. Interactive exhibits help visitors explore the past and interpret the Senhora do Salto site in the present.
For a shorter outing, the Trilho dos Moinhos (PR1) offers a possible route: it is described as a short, 5.2-kilometre circular trail. The Trilho dos Chocolateiros draws on a tradition from Sobrosa. In the afternoon, coffee was served with broa in a ceramic vessel called a “chocolateira”. These trails combine exercise with different aspects of local history. For mountain biking, the Rota do Românico offers routes for a morning, a full day or a two-day trip; published distances range from 20 to 75 kilometres.
Activities for Different Interests
The Parque da Cidade de Paredes covers around 2.5 hectares and offers a place to relax and enjoy contact with nature. Several facilities are available for recreational exercise, as well as play areas for children. The Skate Park is integrated into the green space and is intended for skateboarders, inline skaters and BMX freestyle riders. Ramps, rails and walls provide obstacles for beginners and experienced participants in these sports.
Motorsport enthusiasts will find a 1,203-metre karting track at the Kartódromo de Baltar, as well as separate tracks for rallycross and kartcross. The Campo de Golfe do Aqueduto features a varied, challenging 9-hole course with Par 3, along with two differently configured teeing areas. These offer clearly defined alternatives to the region’s cultural and landscape attractions.
The mining heritage is also part of the visitor offer. The CIMOCB – Centro de Interpretação das Minas de Ouro de Castromil e Banjas was established to showcase the geological, archaeological and cultural mining heritage of Paredes. It serves as a reception centre and starting point for visits to the Castromil gold mines. The industrial tourism offer also includes the Centro de Formação Profissional das Indústrias da Madeira e do Mobiliário, where future craftspeople and designers are trained. The Rota do Românico information centres in Paredes support visitors and tourists.
