Paredes brings together a distinctive architectural history, cultural venues, traditional craftsmanship and green spaces within the city. If you want to make culture and urban greenery the focus of your trip, the town offers several options: the architecture of Igreja Matriz, the history of the Pelourinho, the Centro Cultural and two parks with different characteristics. You can decide in advance which themes you would most like to shape your stay.

Architecture and Building History in Paredes

Igreja Matriz de Paredes was built in the early 20th century to replace an older church. Its Neoclassical character represents a late expression of the D. Maria style in the municipality of Paredes. The construction period and stylistic connection offer two different perspectives on the church: the new building is associated with an older church, while its architectural classification can also be considered within the municipality.

Palacete da Granja also combines specific design features with a later history of use. Its Brazilian-influenced features include yellow tiles on the façades and large doors and windows. In the early 1990s, the building was restored and developed into the Casa da Cultura. The façade design and the restoration history thus show different aspects of the house, without reducing them to the same period or function.

Traces of the Town's History and Culture

The history of the Pelourinho de Paredes is marked by two clearly distinct dates: on the orders of the municipal council of the time, it was demolished in 1870; in 1933, it was classified as an “Imóvel de Interesse Público.” Its demolition and subsequent classification are part of its historical context. The Portuguese designation refers to the specific classification and is therefore best given in the original.

The Centro Cultural de Paredes (CCP) is located on the site of the former Adega Cooperativa de Paredes. It highlights the connection between the area's industrial past and present. The CCP comprises the Great Auditorium, the Small Auditorium and the Paredes Arena. These three spaces give an overview of the cultural centre's architectural layout; the site's historical connection offers a separate point of entry if you are interested in how the area has changed.

City Parks with Different Characters

Parque José Guilherme Pacheco lies in the heart of the city of Paredes, covers one hectare and is intended for recreation and tranquillity. Parque da Cidade de Paredes offers a different connection to the landscape: it lies alongside Ribeira de Sentiais, a tributary of the Rio Sousa. The Ribeira runs the entire length of Parque da Cidade. This sets the park apart from the smaller Parque José Guilherme Pacheco, whose stated purpose is recreation.

Parque da Cidade also has space for sports and keeping fit. It thus combines its connection to the Ribeira with an opportunity for physical activity. If you compare the two parks, Parque José Guilherme Pacheco stands out for its one-hectare area and its role as a place for recreation and tranquillity; Parque da Cidade is defined by the watercourse and space for sports. These are different focal points within the city.

Traditional Craftsmanship as Another Facet

Knowledge and craftsmanship in working with wood have been passed down through generations in Paredes. This aspect complements the buildings and the history of the former cooperative site with another cultural perspective: alongside designed façades and historical uses, inherited skills in working with a material are also part of the town's character. When planning your time in Paredes, you can weigh up architecture, local history, culture and green spaces rather than limiting your stay to a single theme.
