A stay in Lavra can be shaped around three interests: coastal landscapes, fishing and history. The beaches vary in scenery and facilities; fishing features both as an ongoing traditional craft and in the historical context of fish processing. Buildings and monuments add a perspective on events and architecture from different centuries.

Coastal landscapes with distinct features

Praia do FuntĂŁo lies opposite the town of Lavra and has a broad sandy beach with few rocks. Areas for beach volleyball are available; they may be managed seasonally. At Praia de Angeiras Norte, dunes shape the surroundings. The beach also has extensive infrastructure and facilities for various sports. The differences are clear: sand and a few rocks define the beach at FuntĂŁo, while Praia de Angeiras Norte also has dunes and sports infrastructure.

A bridge connects Praia de Angeiras with Labruge; it is integrated into the local landscape and the flora along the Rio Onda. These features add further landscape details to the distinct beach settings and enhance the coastal views.

Fishing and local festivals

Traditional fishing is still practised at the NĂşcleo PiscatĂłrio da Praia de Angeiras. Fresh fish is the focus at the Mercado Municipal de Angeiras; it comes directly from the boats. This brings two distinct aspects of fishing into view: the continuation of traditional fishing and the market sale of fresh catches.

The Festa da Sardinha is also part of the local events calendar. It takes place at Praia de Angeiras on the first Saturday in July. Check the event announcement for the relevant year before your trip if you would like to include the date in your plans.

Monuments and architectural history

The Roman Tanks of Angeiras were used to salt fish and were designated a National Monument in 1970. The Obelisco da MemĂłria commemorates the landing of D. Pedro IV in 1832 with the liberal troops who came from the Azores. It stands on the boundary between the Freguesia de Lavra and the Freguesia de Perafita. Its location thus links a specific boundary point with a place of historical remembrance.

The present-day Igreja do Divino Salvador de Lavra was completed in 1758, after the original church was demolished in 1721. Its architecture displays features of the Joanine Baroque style. The church continues to host parish celebrations; their dates may vary. The sequence of demolition and completion makes the building’s history clear, while its architectural features offer another perspective on the structure.

The Museu Etnográfico da Escola E.B. 2,3 Dr. José Domingues dos Santos includes various ethnographic objects related to the Freguesia de Lavra and its history. The first edition of the Marchas Sanjoaninas also belongs to recent history: it took place in 2003. The Bairro SAAL – Praia de Angeiras is characterised by functional architecture. This can be seen in a grid of single-storey modules with courtyards and pitched roofs that converge inward.
