Szczyrk between Skrzyczne and Klimczok
Accommodation in Szczyrk
Mountain Setting and Trails
Szczyrk lies in the Beskid Śląski between the slopes of Skrzyczne (1,257 m) and Klimczok (1,117 m). The town extends across elevations ranging from 460 to 600 m. At 1,257 m, Skrzyczne is higher than Klimczok; the town’s built-up areas lie well below both summits. This distinction helps differentiate the elevation of the destination from the summits in the mountain landscape.
Hiking trails start from the center of Szczyrk and reach the summit of Skrzyczne in about 2.5 hours. The center is also a trail junction with routes to Skrzyczne, Klimczok, Przełęcz Karkoszczonka, Błatnia, Przełęcz Salmopolska, and Skalite. The approximate walking time provides a concrete point of reference, while the junction opens up more hiking destinations.
Another route option is the developed trail along the Żylica. It serves residents and tourists year-round, is also used by cyclists, and is suitable for cross-country skiing when weather conditions permit. From the town hall, it leads via Plac św. Jakuba and the Skalite Amphitheater to Skalite; from there, it connects with the cycling route in Buczkowice and Rybarzowice. The out-and-back route is about 20 km long and also includes connected sections beyond Szczyrk.
For a choice between a summit hike and a route that includes mountain railway rides, the Pętla Szczyrkowska is another option. It is a family route with almost 6 km of mountain railway rides, 2 km through Szczyrk, and 2 km along a scenic mountain ridge. One ticket can be used on four mountain railways in any direction. This offers two different ways to plan: an approximate walking time to Skrzyczne and a route combining mountain railway and trail sections.
Cultural Sites and Events
The wooden Sanctuary of St. James the Elder, more than 200 years old, has an ornate interior that highlights the parish’s highland traditions. The Bator Art Gallery in Szczyrk was established in 1995 at the initiative of Barbara and Mirosław Bator. The two places offer different cultural perspectives: the sanctuary focuses on its long history and the parish’s traditions, while the gallery’s founding story takes center stage at the gallery.
The Mountain Museum is located in the grandstand building of the Skalite Amphitheater. The amphitheater is a venue for major cultural, entertainment, and sporting events. Skalite is therefore home to both a specific museum location and an event venue, each with a different function.
Getting Your Bearings in Salmopol
In the Salmopol district, the lower station of a gondola lift to Hala Skrzyczeńska, at an elevation of 1,000 m, is located on the main road. Its starting points and destinations can be distinguished from the hiking trails in the center: those lead to Skrzyczne, while the gondola lift goes to Hala Skrzyczeńska. This gives travelers two different mountain destinations and two different starting points to consider when planning.
