On Castle Hill in Teschen stand the Rotunda of St. Nicholas and the Gothic Piast Tower. Each makes a distinct impression: the Rotunda is considered one of Poland’s oldest architectural monuments, while the tower is 24 metres high. The city’s museums, collections and walking routes also reveal different sides of its history.

Castle Hill and historic buildings

The Rotunda is dedicated to St. Nicholas. Together with the Piast Tower, it makes Castle Hill a place where two distinctive buildings can be explored: the Rotunda, considered particularly old, and the Gothic tower, whose height is clearly stated. These details offer a concrete introduction to Teschen’s architectural history, without suggesting that both landmarks tell the same story.

Museums, society and written culture

The Muzeum Śląska Cieszyńskiego was founded in 1802 by Reverend Leopold Jan Szersznik. It is among the oldest public museums in Central Europe and is considered Poland’s oldest public museum. Its permanent exhibition, “At the Border of History and Cultures,” focuses mainly on the history and culture of the nobility, the bourgeoisie and the rural population in Cieszyn Silesia. These three perspectives bring different social groups into focus.

The Książnica Cieszyńska offers another way to explore the region’s cultural history. It holds more than 130,000 printed volumes, including around 18,500 early printed books and 17,000 manuscripts. Its statutory responsibilities include disseminating knowledge about the written culture of Cieszyn Silesia through exhibitions and academic conferences. The institution is based in the so-called Bludowski House. The building was created in the 18th century by converting a former ducal mint dating from the 13th century.

Printing traditions, design and brewing

The Muzeum Drukarstwa focuses on the printing traditions of Cieszyn Silesia. The museum preserves unique collections and machines that are still operational. The Izba Tradycji showcases the Cieszyn flintlock rifle, whose production began in the second half of the 16th century. This adds the history of technology and craftsmanship to the themes explored by the museums and the collection of written works.

Zamek Cieszyn also brings history together with a contemporary focus: the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Design is housed in the Neoclassical hunting lodge built by the Habsburgs. The Arcyksiążęcy Browar Zamkowy Cieszyn has operated continuously since 1846 and brews beer using traditional methods. These two examples represent different facets of the place—design and entrepreneurship on the one hand, and a long brewing tradition on the other.

Walking routes and getting around Teschen

The Szlak Kociej Szajki leads to Castle Hill, the Market Square and Cieszyńska Wenecja. The latter is a tourist attraction and an area for walks. Its character is shaped in part by the Młynówka, an artificial canal dating from the 16th century. This route connects the city’s history with a walk that takes in both a historic hill and a named walking area.

A combined pedestrian and cycle path runs along the revitalised banks of the Olza near the Open Air Museum. The Open Air Museum Cieszyn–Český Těšín visit starts on the Polish side at the Hala Widowiskowo-Sportowa, follows Aleja Piastowska across the Friendship Bridge, and then continues along the Czech bank.

For planning your visit, the routes offer different ways to get around: the Szlak Kociej Szajki leads to three destinations within the city, while the Open Air Museum visit crosses the Friendship Bridge to the Czech side of the river. During your stay in Teschen, you can choose whether to focus your time on the landmarks and collections mentioned here or along the Olza.
