Zagórów – Church, Market and Landscape
Accommodation in Zagórów
Travelers can get to know Zagórów through several distinct points of interest: the Church of St. Peter and Paul, the market at Duży Rynek, and the scenic stretch of road between Zagórów and Ląd. These themes appeal to different interests—sacred architecture, regular market activity, and the landscape along a road. If you are looking for a hotel in Zagórów, you can plan your stay around these highlights: Would you like to focus mainly on the church’s architectural and art history, take one of the market days into account, or include the scenery along the road to Ląd in your plans?
Church of St. Peter and Paul: Architecture and Furnishings
The Church of St. Peter and Paul was renovated in the late Baroque style between 1740 and 1760. The renovation was made possible by a donation from the Abbot of Ląd, Antoni Mikołaj Łukomski. This places the architectural history within a clearly defined period and links it to a named benefactor. The church rises behind a gate dating from 1800; the renovation and the gate provide two specific points of reference in time.
The interior has a single nave and a rectangular chancel. There are two chapels in the arms of the transept: one is dedicated to Our Lady, the other to the Holy Cross. The furnishings include late Baroque side altars, a Rococo baptismal font, and a pulpit decorated with the Pobóg and Ślepowron coats of arms.
The vault features polychrome decoration by Aleksander Przewalski. The term refers to multicolored painted decoration; Przewalski was a painter and sculptor, as well as a student of Jan Matejko. The main altar contains an image of Our Lady and Child, dating from the mid-17th century, in a Rococo frame. Sculptures of Saints Peter and Paul from the 16th century stand beside the main altar.
The dates of the artworks and the renovation provide a concrete basis for chronological comparison: the sculptures date from the 16th century, the image from the mid-17th century, and the renovation took place between 1740 and 1760. This makes it possible to consider the older artworks and the later renovation phase as distinct historical points of reference.
Market, Landscape and Location
A market is held at Duży Rynek every Wednesday and Saturday. If you would like to plan your stay around this regular event, consider visiting on a Wednesday or Saturday and confirm locally that the market is taking place before you arrive. The market thus provides a clear point of reference for planning, while the church offers a cultural and historical focus.
Zagórów is located near the Warta River in Słupca County, in the Greater Poland Voivodeship. The county and voivodeship provide regional context, while the Warta River offers an additional geographical reference point. The stretch of road between Zagórów and Ląd is another possible point of interest: it is scenically attractive. Together, these offer different perspectives to consider when planning your trip—local history, market activity, and landscape.
