Ostrowite: Historical Sites and Landscapes
Accommodation in Ostrowite
Ostrowite offers two distinct themes to consider when planning a trip: historic buildings and memorial sites in the town, and landscapes within the municipality and nearby. When choosing a hotel for your stay, you can first decide whether local history or the wider landscape should be your focus. The historical sites range from a manor house complex to tombs; the natural landscape includes an intermunicipal landscape park, a protected landscape area and Lake Powidzkie.
Historic Buildings and Memorial Sites
Ostrowite’s historic features include the remains of a manor house complex. In addition, an inn is the town’s oldest inhabited building still standing today. These examples represent different forms of preservation: remains of the manor house complex have survived, while the inn continues to stand as a single building and remains inhabited. To understand the town’s history, it is worth distinguishing between these two sites. They show that both a manor house complex and a single building are among Ostrowite’s historical themes.
A metal tower is a notable monument in Ostrowite and a remnant from the 1930s. This example of technical heritage adds another form of historical legacy to the manor house remains and the inn. The time periods also differ: the tower dates from the 1930s, while the manor owners’ tombs in the parish cemetery date from the 19th century. Ostrowite’s historical themes thus span several periods and include different kinds of buildings and memorial sites.
Rectory and Cemetery
After the First World War, a rectory was built in Ostrowite, known locally as “Organistówka.” Its intended role extended beyond use as a building: its activities were meant to contribute to the development of culture and education in the surrounding area. Its construction history is therefore linked to cultural and educational aims. “Organistówka” forms a distinct part of the town’s history alongside the older manor house remains and the metal tower.
Two manor owners’ tombs are located in Ostrowite’s parish cemetery. One was built in the mid-19th century, and the other toward the end of the same century. These dates allow for a specific comparison of their age within the cemetery. There is also a tomb of the Tylman family. The two manor owners’ tombs and the family tomb represent distinct historical connections at this site: the former are dated, while the latter is identified as the tomb of the Tylman family.
The Municipality and Surrounding Landscape
Powidz Landscape Park was established in 1998 and covers 24,600 hectares. It extends across parts of the municipalities of Kleczew, Orchowo, Ostrowite, Powidz, Słupca, Wilczyn and Witkowo. Ostrowite is therefore part of a landscape park that spans several municipalities. The total area of 24,600 hectares describes the park as a whole, not Ostrowite alone. For a broader understanding of the area, it is also important to note that Ostrowite’s connection to the park is at the municipal level.
Almost the entire municipality of Ostrowite lies within the Powidzko-Bieniszewski Protected Landscape Area. This describes the municipality’s protected-area context, while Powidz Landscape Park has its own total area and encompasses several municipalities. The two designations describe the landscape at different scales: almost the entire municipality in one case, and an intermunicipal park in the other.
Nearby, Lake Powidzkie lies on the boundary between the municipalities of Powidz and Ostrowite. The lake has numerous beaches and moorings; the places of Powidz, Przybrodzin and Kosewo are associated with it. This adds a specific nearby point of interest to the landscape context of the municipality as a whole. The lake offers a different perspective from the protected-area information: it is a body of water with beaches and moorings, while the landscape park and protected landscape area describe larger areas and connections between municipalities.
