On a trip to Wysoka, church architecture, remembrance and landscape are distinct themes that sit side by side. If you are looking for a hotel, these points of interest can help you decide what brings you to the area: the town is home to a historic church complex and the central Plac Wolności, while the Góry Wysockie lie to the west of Wysoka.

Church complex and architectural history

The historic church complex in Wysoka consists of the Church of Matki Boskiej Różańcowej, the detached former monastery, now used as a rectory, and a bell tower.

The Church of Matki Boskiej Różańcowej is a three-aisled hall church with a rectangular floor plan. Its chancel is narrower and lower than the main building and has a flat end. The three aisles define the layout of the church interior, while the lower, narrower chancel forms its termination.

The parish church of Najświętszej Maryi Panny Różańcowej is Late Baroque and was consecrated in 1729. The main altar contains a painting of Matki Boskiej Śnieżnej dating from the mid-17th century. The painting therefore predates the church’s consecration.

Beside the church stands an 18th-century half-timbered bell tower with three bells. The oldest dates from 1664, making it older than the tower. The detached former monastery of the Lateran Canons, dating from the 18th century, is now used as a rectory.

Townscape and industrial history

In the center of Wysoka is the triangular Plac Wolności, lined with historic townhouses. The town’s industrial heritage includes the listed former narrow-gauge railway section between Czajcze and Wysoka. It runs from Czajcze station to the intersection with Św. Walentego Street.

Memorial sites in Wysoka

A mass grave for victims of German terror in 1939 is located in the parish cemetery in Wysoka. It contains the remains of 18 Poles who were exhumed on 20 July 1945 at the execution site near Góry Wysockie and buried in the mass grave. The year 1945 refers to the exhumation and burial; it is not the year of the terror described.

A stone monument in the vicinity of Wysoka commemorates the execution of 19 residents of Wysoka in October 1939. A municipal memorial project improved visitor access in 2023; the project measures included a car park, an access road and a walking path. The two memorial sites can be clearly distinguished by their details: the mass grave is associated with the 18 Poles and their exhumation in 1945, while the monument commemorates the 19 residents and the execution in October 1939.

Landscape and cycle path

The Góry Wysockie lie about 1.5 km west of Wysoka and reach an elevation of 156.8 m above sea level; by contrast, Plac Wolności is in the center of Wysoka. The natural landscape and the central town area are thus distinct points of reference. An existing cycle path runs along Akacjowa and Batorego Streets in Wysoka.
