Ujście: Kalwaria Ujska, churches and river landscape
Accommodation in Ujście
Ujście lies where the Gwda flows into the Noteć. The town combines this distinctive riverside setting with religious and architectural attractions. You can choose from different themes when planning your trip: churches and pilgrimage sites, art, river landscapes and viewpoints. If you are looking for hotels in Ujście, these distinctions can help you match the character of the destination to your interests.
Churches and Kalwaria Ujska
In the centre of Ujście, south of the market square, is the church complex, which includes the parish church of St. Nicholas. It is a three-aisled, Neo-Baroque basilica with a transept. The three aisles define the longitudinal space, while the transept forms the cross arm. St. Nicholas is the archdiocesan sanctuary of the Precious Blood of Jesus Christ; a decree dated December 6, 2025, establishes this designation. Relics of the Holy Cross are also kept in the church. Its architecture and religious significance can be considered together, although they describe different aspects of the church.
Another major pilgrimage destination is Kalwaria Ujska. It comprises 14 Stations of the Cross chapels, a Lourdes grotto, a Sacred Heart chapel, an Ogrójec and the castle-like Belle Vue building. In addition to its religious significance, its natural significance is also officially recognized: in 1997, Kalwaria Ujska was entered in the register of monuments for this reason. Since 1895, the indulgence festival in honour of the Precious Blood of Jesus has been held there on the first Sunday in July. If you are travelling specifically for the festival, check the date for the relevant year.
Local history and art
The former Protestant church on the Old Market offers a different perspective on the town’s cultural history. It was built in 1851–1852; a gallery was housed in the former church. Its programme at the time included exhibitions of painting, sculpture, photography and handicrafts, as well as author events and music concerts. While St. Nicholas and Kalwaria are the focal points for sacred heritage, the gallery represents a different range of cultural themes.
River landscape and views
The boundary between the Noteć Valley and the Chodzież Upland runs through Ujście. There, the upland forms a high escarpment cut by long ravines. The valley and upland are two distinct landscape features that meet in Ujście. The observation tower is on Osiedle Górne, at the edge of the Toruń-Eberswalde Ice-Marginal Valley. From there, you can see the ice-marginal valley and the lower-lying town. The view connects the surrounding landscape with the town’s position below the tower.
There are also two specific points of reference for a trip involving water. A 145-kilometre kayak trail from Drężno via Piła ends in Ujście. The marina is also located on the banks of the Noteć. When planning your trip, you can distinguish between the longer kayak route, which ends in Ujście, and the town’s local connection to the river.
