Rheeze: Village Green, Cultural Landscape and Routes
Accommodation in Rheeze
Rheeze combines a protected village setting with a cultural landscape that can also be explored along nearby routes. The village green and old farmsteads define the village; to the north lie the Rheezerbelten, with sand hills and oak coppice woodland. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between a visit to the village and the various routes around Rheeze.
Village Green and Historic Barns
Rheeze is designated as a protected village conservation area in the municipality of Hardenberg, in the province of Overijssel, under reference number 1388. A characteristic feature is the well-preserved village green, around which the farmsteads are arranged. The village setting cannot therefore be reduced to individual buildings: the open green and the layout of the farmsteads belong together.
Many old farm barns made of darkened wood are among the most distinctive buildings. Some sections are made of woven reed; many of the barns are Rijksmonumenten, meaning nationally protected monuments. As you walk around, look out for the contrast between the dark wood and the woven wall sections. Together with the farmsteads around the green, they offer a tangible impression of the building style that defines Rheeze.
Landscape Along the Vecht
The Rheezerbelten lie nearby, north of Rheeze: a wind-blown cover-sand ridge with oak coppice woodland. From the sand hills, you can look out over the lower-lying Vecht Valley. You can picnic in this landscape and wander through the sand hills. A visit to the surrounding area thus offers two distinct experiences: the wooded sand ridges and the view across the valley.
Local field names can also help you better understand the cultural landscape. The Rheezer Esch comprises higher-lying esch fields along the Vecht that belong to the Rheeze marke. De Hui, in turn, is the field name for the Vecht’s river valley grasslands in this area. The terms therefore refer to different landscape features: the higher-lying esch fields on the one hand, and the grasslands in the river valley on the other.
Routes and Their Starting Points
The 12.8 km “Rondje Rheeze” route starts at the De Oldemeijer recreational lake. Yellow arrows mark the route, which passes the green village of Rheeze. This connects the route information to the village: Rheeze lies along the route, even though the starting point is at the recreational lake.
Another option nearby is the 11 km “Verwonderroute De Rheezermaten.” It can be started at De Rheezerbelten and is a route in the surrounding area, not one that runs entirely through the village. The two routes differ in their stated length and starting point: De Oldemeijer for “Rondje Rheeze” and De Rheezerbelten for “Verwonderroute De Rheezermaten.” These differences can help you choose the right focus for your outing without combining the routes into a single trail.
Museum and Activities
The Natuurmuseum Rheeze-Marke is located in the village, along one of the many cycling routes in the municipality of Hardenberg. Rheezer-Marke displays 400 taxidermied animals, some arranged in a diorama. The display may change. The “Vechtslinger” day trip includes a puzzle trail in the museum, where teams complete touch-and-find challenges. At Aspergeboerderij Het Nijenhuis, everyone also prepares something tasty together. If you are planning this tour, check the provider’s latest information in advance.
The cycle path between Hardenberg and Rheeze has also been renewed. This gives you several different reasons to choose this destination: the protected village with its green and barns, walks in the surrounding area, or a visit focused on nature and puzzles. The route lengths and starting points give you practical details to help plan your trip.
