Bruchterveld offers practical starting points for a stay, with its local history, landscape and activities. The village developed as a community at the crossroads of what are now Hongerdijk and Broekdijk. Broekdijk shapes the character of the place: it starts at the Overijssels Kanaal northwest of Bruchterveld, runs through the village and continues east of it as the extended Broekdijk. When looking for a hotel, it may help to first consider whether you want to focus your trip on historical development, walking routes or individual local activities.

Road, village history and peat

Broekdijk is not only a reference point for the village’s origins. It was recently converted into a cycle street in Bruchterveld. Broekdijk starts at the Overijssels Kanaal northwest of Bruchterveld, runs through the village and continues east of it as the extended Broekdijk. The crossroads of what are now Hongerdijk and Broekdijk, in turn, marks the place where the village community developed.

Another historical thread leads to peat extraction. The Bruchterwijk was dug eastwards from the Overijssels Kanaal in 1857 to extract and transport peat. The road layout and the Bruchterwijk thus represent different aspects of local history: the development of the village community around a crossroads and the construction of a canal for peat extraction. If you would like to learn about Bruchterveld through its history, you can consider these topics separately without combining them into a single account of the village’s origins.

Walking routes and getting your bearings

Bruchterveld has two walking routes, ranging from 3.7 to 13.2 kilometres in length. They start at the crossroads of Broekdijk and Geert Arendsweg. The different route lengths give you a practical basis for planning: you can compare shorter and longer walks before finalising other plans for the day. The named starting point also makes clear where the routes begin.

There is a water refill point by the church, where the community bus also stops. Many walkers and cyclists pass this point. The water refill point is closed seasonally during frosty weather. Alongside the route lengths, this practical information helps you get your bearings locally, while the Broekterveld cycle street offers a different way to explore the area. This gives you different points of reference for planning, without treating the walking routes and cycle street as the same route.

Art, remembrance and local activities

The metal artwork De Wiekslag, created in 1998, is located at Wijkstraat 4, by Basisschool de Wiekslag. The work is about three metres high, including its plinth. If you are interested in this part of Bruchterveld, you can consider De Wiekslag as a topic in its own right, alongside the history of the roads and peat extraction.

The village’s history also includes events from the Second World War. An aircraft crashed at Breeslootdijk on 1 April 1945. The pilot, Donald Peter Drummond, was temporarily buried by De Ark church in Bruchterveld. The crash site and the place of temporary burial are therefore two distinct geographical points of reference in this story.

A route poster from 2026 lists the eastern sub-route of the Grensland Bevrijdingsroute, with the PKN church in Bruchterveld as the starting point on 5 May. The start window is given as 10:00 to 15:00, with guided departures at 10:30 and 13:30. For later editions, please check the date and departure arrangements again.

Cooking workshops are also among the local activities: De Uitdaging offers them at the authentic Ot en Sien school in Bruchterveld. If a cooking workshop is an important reason for your trip, check the participation details before planning. This lets you weigh up local history, routes and culinary activities as different focuses for your stay.
