Sibculo combines a specific monastery history with a themed walking route and varied landscapes. When planning your trip, you can choose from several highlights: the “Vier tijdperken” route spans different periods, the Kloostertuin groups plants around historical and religious themes, and the municipal forest includes dry and wet areas, as well as higher- and lower-lying terrain. The Zichtbaar Verleden Museum adds to the picture of the former Cistercian monastery.

Monastery History and Kloostertuin

The Groot Galilea monastery was founded in 1406 at the monastery site in Sibculo. At Grachtstraat/Kloosterstraat, the listed monument includes the remains of a 15th-century Cistercian monastery. The dates emphasize different periods: 1406 marks the founding of Groot Galilea, while the remains date from the 15th century. This keeps the founding year and the monastery remains distinct as reference points in the history of the area.

The Kloostertuin was laid out in 2016 on the site of the medieval cloister garden. It has five beds: one with medicinal herbs and four with plants associated with the Bible, the Cistercians, the monks of Sibculo and Mary. The garden thus combines medicinal herbs with religious and monastic-history themes. While the dating of the remains provides a chronological reference point, the garden can be explored through its themes and the arrangement of its beds.

Walking Route and Landscape

The “Vier tijdperken” route is a walk of less than three kilometers that takes you through the Ice Age, the Middle Ages, the 20th century and the present day. Its timeline therefore extends beyond the monastery’s history: the Middle Ages share the route with the Ice Age and later periods. This sets the walk apart from the monument and the Kloostertuin, which are directly connected with the history of the monastery site.

The municipal forest around the Spartelvijver recreational lake and the monastery grounds has dry and wet areas, as well as higher- and lower-lying terrain. Moisture and elevation are therefore two features that shape the character of the forest. While the monument and garden focus mainly on historical connections, the forest offers a chance to explore the changing landscapes around the lake and monastery grounds.

Museum and Getting Around

The Zichtbaar Verleden Museum presents the history of the former Cistercian monastery. Exhibits include archaeological finds from the 1928 excavations at the former monastery site, as well as geological rock samples from Sibculo’s sand excavations. The exhibition therefore connects the history of the monastery site with geological finds from Sibculo. The museum is located at Kloosterdijk 178b in Sibculo.

Bus route 80 between Almelo and Hoogeveen stops a two-minute walk from the museum. Check the timetable before traveling so you can plan your journey using the current services.

An official cycle route between Kloosterhaar and Sibculo follows Dorpsstraat/N341 and Kloosterstraat/N341 to Kloosterdijk; its end is near the boundary of Sibculo. As cycling infrastructure can change, check current conditions before setting out.
