Hardenberg offers different starting points for planning a trip: art routes and walking or cycling routes sit alongside local history and activities along the Vecht. If you are looking for a hotel in Hardenberg, you can plan your stay around these interests. For practical planning, the specific formats and route details are especially useful.

Art, Hiking Trails and Cycling Routes

The 180-kilometre Kunstwegen art route passes through art and nature and includes 80 works of art. Along Kunstwegen, you can walk sections between the NS railway stations on the Zwolle–Dalfsen–Ommen–Mariënberg–Hardenberg–Gramsbergen route. The route is marked with white and blue signs. This lets you combine art and nature with a stage-by-stage plan between the stations.

The Pieterpad section from Coevorden to Hardenberg is 19 kilometres long. If you are planning a different kind of activity, Hardenberg has a 23-kilometre mountain biking route through a wooded area. It starts and ends at the Oldemeijer car park. Before setting out, it is advisable to check for temporary changes to the route or parking arrangements. The route details help you compare the different tours; they are intended for different activities and do not involve the same kind of time commitment.

Water and Activity

The whitewater canoe course in Hardenberg is the first in the Netherlands to use the natural gradient of a river. The 140-metre course overcomes a height difference of 1.5 metres. Individual canoeists and clubs can use the course free of charge, as it operates without pumps. Since the conditions of use may change, it is best to check them before making plans.

Museum and Local History

Museum 't Stadhuus is housed in Hardenberg’s former town hall, dating from 1805. Its archaeology section displays notable finds from the surrounding area. Another section focuses on Hardenberg’s Jewish residents and the Molengoot Jewish labour camp. The museum therefore offers different perspectives on the history of the town and its surroundings.

The town wall can also be included in a historical tour: a reconstructed section uses original materials. The town wall is a Rijksmonument and was fully restored in 2019. A guided historical walking tour of Hardenberg takes about two hours and starts at Museum 't Stadhuus. As arrangements may change, check dates and availability in advance.

Another option is the “Historische wandeling 75 jaar vrijheid” (“Historical Walk: 75 Years of Freedom”), a historical walking route through the centre focusing on Holocaust history in the heart of Hardenberg. The accompanying booklet can be downloaded; check that the materials are available before making plans. The two formats are clearly distinct: the town walk is led by a guide, while the themed route comes with a downloadable booklet.

De Koppel and the Vecht

The De Koppel nature activity centre is in Hardenberg, on the Vecht, by a weir and lock. It is within walking distance of the centre. Behind De Koppel are the Koppeltuinen gardens, located in the Vecht’s floodplains and covering almost three hectares. Mushroom excursions are part of De Koppel’s activity programme. As the programme may change, check in advance whether the activity you want is being offered.

To find your way around Vechtpark, look for the Poortlijn, an entrance marked by a gateway bearing the words “VECHTPARK”. Together with De Koppel’s location and the Koppeltuinen, this provides another starting point for a stay focused on the Vecht and its surroundings.

When looking for a hotel in Hardenberg, you can first decide which focus suits your trip: art and hiking stages, local history, a cycling tour or activities around De Koppel. The different route lengths, formats and themes provide practical guidance, without requiring you to limit your plans to just one type of stay.
