San Fatucchio combines a hillside setting with evidence from different periods. The residential area of San Fatucchio lies on a hill overlooking Lake Trasimeno. Archaeological finds, churches and the Museum of Rural Culture give the town several cultural points of interest. During your stay, you can choose to focus on the landscape, local history, or the museum’s collections and workshop topics.

Hilly Landscape and Local History

The Chiesa di San Felice Papa stands on a hill about 300 metres from San Fatucchio, surrounded by cypress trees and the gentle hills of Umbria. The Chiesa di San Felice was built between 1200 and 1300. In 1632, Sebastiano Ricci, Bishop of Città della Pieve, declared the Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie the parish church. Some structures in San Fatucchio are still visible; according to the historian Don Remo Serafini, they belonged to an earlier customs and market area of the duchy. The town’s history therefore encompasses not only churches but also visible structural remains, whose historical interpretation is attributed to Serafini.

Archaeological Traces

A Villanovan tomb was found along the road from San Fatucchio to Vaiano. Etruscan and Roman tombs in the area around San Fatucchio attest to the presence of ancient cultures. Visitors interested in archaeology can therefore find both a specifically identified tomb discovery and evidence of several ancient cultures in the surrounding area. These topics complement the churches and visible structures, offering another way to explore the area’s history.

Museum and Hands-on Culture

The Museo della civiltà contadina “Il granaio della memoria” is located in the Casa del Contadino next to the Chiesa di San Felice Papa. The museum includes a library with around 800 volumes on local Umbrian history and traditions, ethnomusicology, linguistics, photography, hagiography, folk tales, legends and popular stories. Its subject range thus extends from regional history to language, music, photography and storytelling. If you are interested in rural culture, this offers another focus alongside the churches and archaeological topics.

The museum offers workshops for children and adults that include practical creative activities. In a previous workshop, children learned how to make silk threads from cocoons, tried out small looms and watched a large loom being operated. The library and workshops offer different ways to engage: one brings together a range of subjects, while the others provide hands-on creative experiences. Check the specific workshop dates before your trip.

Dates to Help Plan Your Trip

The Fiera di San Felice Papa is associated with the dates 30 April and 1 May; the dates may vary in some years. If the event is important to your stay, check the dates for the relevant year. It is also worth checking the specific workshop dates before your trip. This will help you plan around an event day or focus on the landscape and historical attractions independently of the event.
