Scheggino lies in the heart of the Valnerina and stretches along the banks of the Nera. The town is also a stop on the Via di Francesco. Nature trails, historic buildings and truffle-related attractions give a trip here a variety of focal points. If you are looking for a hotel in Scheggino, these interests may help shape your choice of destination.

Trails and nature around Scheggino

Fonti di Valcasana is a large natural garden just outside Porta Valcasana. The springs include crystal-clear waters. The park also contains evidence of a 19th-century fish farm; today, there is a lake for sport fishing on the site. Here, the spring landscape and a reminder of an earlier use stand side by side.

The Greenway del Nera section from Scheggino to Ceselli begins in the town and follows artificial canals. Beyond the medieval gate, it becomes a flat, unpaved path leading to Ceselli. Another hiking trail starts at Fonti di Valcasana and partly follows old transhumance routes and historic ironworks roads to Piano delle Melette. The two descriptions offer different pointers for planning: the Greenway leads to Ceselli, while the trail from the springs leads to Piano delle Melette.

Cycling trips also offer a variety of options. The Ciclovia del Fiume Nera is an easy route from Sant’Anatolia di Narco to the Cascata delle Marmore and offers a day in the natural surroundings of the Valnerina. A municipal description dated February 11, 2022, characterizes the SpoletoNorcia Gravel as a cycling tour over paved and unpaved surfaces with steady gradients. It is not a race and has no ranking or time limit; details may vary by edition.

Castle, gates and art

Castello di Scheggino is a triangular hillside castle with a watchtower at its tip. It was built in the second half of the 13th century to protect one of the few bridges over the Nera. Its shape and hillside location are as much a part of the description as its historic connection to the bridge.

Several gates add to the character of the town. Porta del Pozzo dates from the 17th century. Porta Valcasana was built in the 16th century; a section of the Via del Ferro once led from there. In the Chiesa di San Nicola, the apse frescoes are attributed to the circle of Giovanni, known as Lo Spagna. Near Ceselli, there is also a high-quality climbing wall on the old road that once connected Osteria di Ceselli with Castello di Scheggino.

Truffles and regional specialties

The Museo del Tartufo Urbani presents snapshots of life connected with finding, processing, preserving and distributing truffles through photographs and old tools. The museum includes a boutique where you can buy fresh and preserved truffles, high-quality porcini mushrooms and other products. Scheggino is also counted among the truffle-producing areas, together with Norcia and areas along the Nera, Corno and Sordo rivers.

Trout is another of the area's culinary specialties. It is a salmonid and requires cool, clear waters. So, alongside truffles, the conditions of a river habitat are also in focus. If you would like to combine nature and regional produce when planning your trip, the springs, river landscape and Truffle Museum offer several points of interest.

More activities in the Valnerina

Guided rafting trips in canoes and inflatable boats are available in the Valnerina. This regional activity complements the hiking and cycling routes described above with another way to experience the landscape. Options range from a flat, unpaved path to Ceselli and historic trails to a longer cycling route between Sant’Anatolia di Narco and the Cascata delle Marmore. The destinations and descriptions can help you choose the focus of your trip to Scheggino.
