Montefalco: Culture, History and Wine
Accommodation in Montefalco
Montefalco combines architectural history, museum experiences and wine offerings. Choosing what to explore depends on which aspects appeal to you: churches and historic spaces, views across the countryside, or tastings and wine-related events. Each stop gives your stay a different focus.
Churches, Museum and Architectural History
The San Francesco museum complex is housed in the former Church of San Francesco and the historic rooms of the adjoining monastery. The church was built between 1335 and 1338. The museum complex also preserves a cycle of twelve scenes from the life of Saint Francis, dating from 1452. Together, these sites reveal different chapters in Montefalco’s religious and architectural history.
Other buildings also show evidence of different construction phases. The Church of Sant’Agostino was built in 1275 on the remains of the earlier Church of San Giovanni Battista; inside is a Renaissance wooden crucifix. The Palazzo Comunale dates from 1270 and was extended along its entire left side in the 15th century. Montefalco is surrounded by walls dating from the 13th and 14th centuries.
The Cantina dei Frati in the museum complex offers insight into the history of wine production. The ancient cellars of the Franciscan Friars Minor were uncovered during the latest restoration work and opened to visitors in 2006. They were fitted with 18th- and 19th-century equipment for processing and producing wine. The surviving fixtures include historic vats for collecting, treading and storing wine, as well as a recess for a wine press.
The Teatro San Filippo Neri tells another chapter in the city’s history: the former church dates from 1705 and was converted into a theater in 1895. The theater space can still be used for a variety of purposes.
Piazza del Comune and Panoramic Views
Piazza del Comune sits at the highest point of the medieval town. Montefalco is known as the “Balcony of Umbria” for its panoramic views. You can also enjoy a sweeping view from the bell tower above the Palazzo Comunale, which is open to visitors following renovation and safety work. Check the tower’s access rules before you arrive. This lets you combine a visit to historic buildings with a viewpoint without treating the two experiences as the same.
Wine Experiences and Comparing Offers
At Montefalco nel bicchiere, experienced sommeliers lead tastings of wines from the DOC Spoleto, DOC Montefalco and DOCG Montefalco Sagrantino appellations. The 2026 program also includes a tasting every Saturday at 4 p.m. at the San Francesco museum complex. Since the program and wine selection are subject to change over time, check the latest dates and tasting selection before your visit.
The Sagrantino Lovers program combines a visit with a Wine Expert and takes you through the entire production chain, from the vineyards to bottling. At Cantina Romanelli, cellar tours and tastings are available by reservation and focus on wines from Montefalco. The tours take you through vineyards and striking landscapes. A reservation is required for this visit; check availability in advance.
The Strada del Sagrantino also lets you explore its area via 27 hiking trails. In the Immersive Room at the San Francesco museum complex, you can take a virtual journey through the area using interactive stations. This gives you a choice between trails in the region and a digital museum experience; the virtual stations are not a hiking route.
Events in August
Agosto Montefalchese takes place every year in August, with performances and concerts. The program includes the historical Fuga del Bove costume reenactment on August 12, 13 and 14, involving Montefalco’s four districts. Today, the Fuga del Bove is a competition featuring various contests between the four historic districts for the Falco d’Oro. The two descriptions distinguish the historical costume event from the competition as it is held today. Check the dates for the relevant edition before traveling.
Whether you’re most interested in churches and the museum, panoramic views, wine or the August program, choosing among these experiences will help you plan your stay in Montefalco around your interests.
