Colbassano’s historical landmarks include San Pietro and Villa Collis Bassani, which is associated with the village. For trip planning, there are also attractions across the municipality of Fossato di Vico: the Festa degli Statuti, the rail connection, and several routes. The information differs significantly: one circular route is part of the tourist route network, while two other routes are described as plans. This makes it possible to consider local history, festival dates, and travel separately.

The history of San Pietro and Villa Collis Bassani

Colbassano is considered one of the settlements in Fossato di Vico with very ancient origins. The historic villa associated with Colbassano is known as “Villa Collis Bassani.” Between 1516 and 1542, Villa Collis Bassani was listed among the settlements in the Fossato di Vico area at the time. The former parish of San Pietro in Colbassano existed from 1826 to 1860. Today, the Church of San Pietro in Colbassano is no longer a parish church. The two time periods mark different historical stages: the period of the listing is well before the years of the former parish, while the church is described by its present-day status.

Festa degli Statuti in Fossato di Vico

The Festa degli Statuti is celebrated in Fossato di Vico every year on the second weekend in May. The festival lasts three days and recreates life in 1386. It also celebrates the “Publicatio Statutorum,” or the publication of the statutes of Fossato. The historical reenactment and the celebration of the statutes give the event two specific themes.

Landscape and routes in the municipality

As a wider landscape setting, Fossato di Vico lies at the foot of the Umbria-Marche Apennines in the Parco del Monte Cucco. The Parco Regionale del Monte Cucco extends across the Umbrian municipalities of Scheggia e Pascelupo, Costacciaro, Sigillo, and Fossato di Vico. The municipality’s tourist route network includes the circular route “Anello della Cima Mutali.”

Two planned routes should be distinguished from this. A plan described on July 27, 2023, proposes a route that would climb through Colbassano within the municipality, descend towards the Flaminia, cross it in the final section, and reach Fossato di Vico railway station. Another description from July 27, 2023, concerns a planned new cycle route between Umbertide, Gubbio, and Fossato di Vico. It is intended to be about 52 kilometres long; parts of the route are planned to run on the former railway’s trackbed. The descriptions of the route through Colbassano and the longer cycle route concern different plans. Check the current planning status before making specific decisions about your route.
