Pantanella: Hiking Trails and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Pantanella
When looking for a hotel in Pantanella, you can sort out the interests for your stay in advance. Hiking and nature take center stage on Monte Malbe; Castelvieto and Corciano add local history, churches, and collections to the mix. The trails and sights offer different highlights, from a specifically described hiking route to art and archaeological finds.
Hiking Trails and Nature on Monte Malbe
The Anello M19 di Monte Malbe is a moderately difficult hiking trail. It is about 12.5 kilometers long, with a stated walking time of five hours, not including breaks. Check the trail information before setting out, and bear in mind when planning your day that breaks are not included in this time. The trail can be walked and is also suitable in part for bicycles and horses.
Rare specimens of the Italian pool frog and the Italian crested newt are found at Troscia del Melo on the Anello M19. Both species are protected at the European level; sightings during your visit are not guaranteed. Small ponds along the trails on Monte Malbe are also home to fauna protected at the European level.
The Anello M19 leads to the hermitage of San Salvatore, also known as the Romitorio. The MTB-08 has a different character: it runs mostly through the forests of Monte Malbe and offers views of the surrounding landscapes, including Perugia. The M19 is notable for its length and walking time, while the MTB-08 stands out for its forest route and views.
There are currently five hiking trails on Monte Malbe. One of them, the Sentiero Fantastico, is specifically intended for children and their families. The different details help you choose the focus of your trip: a stated walking time, forests and views, or trails with a concept explicitly designed for families. Since trail status may change, check the current conditions before setting out.
Local History and Culture
Castelvieto is nearby. Today, access to the fortified village is through an opening in the old wall. The Church of Santa Maria stands outside the walls and was built in 1564. This makes the entrance to the village and the church’s location outside the fortifications two distinct architectural features to consider.
The historic center of Corciano also preserves many elements of its medieval character: walls, lanes, stairs, palaces, towers, gardens, churches, and bell towers. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta houses Perugino’s altarpiece of the Assumption, dating from 1513. The combination of preserved architectural structures and a dated work of art offers two different ways to explore the town’s history.
The Antiquarium of Corciano displays Mesozoic ammonite fossils from Migiana, dating from the Early Jurassic, as well as remains of Quaternary mammals from Ellera, dating from the Early Pleistocene. The collections therefore include finds from different geological periods and locations. The Antiquarium is divided into paleontological, prehistoric, protohistoric, and archaeological sections.
The Corciano Tourist Office is located in the municipal Antiquarium. If you plan to visit, check its current location and services in advance. This lets you include the museum visit and any inquiry at the Tourist Office in your plans.
