Discover Petrignano: Castle, Fresco and Chiascio
Accommodation in Petrignano
Petrignano offers travellers interested in history and culture several specific points of interest: a stone castle with a round tower, a fresco from 1502 and performances with different connections to the area. La Passione Vivente takes place every year on the evening of Palm Sunday; the Presepe vivente di Petrignano d’Assisi is a historical performance. This means you can take both the event date and the local history into account when planning your trip.
Castle and Visual Art
The Castello di Petrignano is a stone castle with a round tower. During the Presepe vivente, the route passes through the lanes of the medieval Castello and along the banks of the Chiascio River. This allows you to consider the building both for its features and for its role in the course of the historical performance.
The fresco from 1502 depicts the enthroned Madonna with the Christ Child, surrounded by seraphim and Saints Sebastian and Roch. In the landscape in the background, the Chiascio and curved boats are shown. Religious figures and a specific landscape motif thus appear side by side in the same image, with the river forming part of the painted setting.
Because of severe moisture damage, the fresco was moved to the parish church of San Pietro in 1897. This transfer marks another historical stage in the work’s history. When viewing it, the subject includes not only the figures and the river landscape depicted, but also the history of its relocation.
Performances and Dates
La Passione Vivente is performed every year on the evening of Palm Sunday. The 2026 edition is also part of this annual tradition. If you wish to plan your trip around the performance, Palm Sunday evening is the key date to bear in mind.
The Presepe vivente, by contrast, focuses on the route and its historical setting: the route passes through the lanes of the medieval Castello and along the Chiascio. The dates of the Presepe vary from year to year. When planning, it is therefore helpful to distinguish the annually recurring Palm Sunday evening of the Passione Vivente from the changing dates of the Presepe.
Getting to the Castello
From Assisi, you can reach the Castello di Petrignano on bus routes E007 and E210. The E007 connects Assisi and Petrignano with Perugia; the E210 runs via Petrignano, S. Gregorio and Valfabbrica. Both routes therefore connect Assisi and Petrignano, but serve different places beyond them. Before travelling, check the timetable for the route that suits your planned journey.
To drive there, head towards Perugia from the Giovanni Paolo II car park in Assisi. Then follow the signs for Aeroporto, Petrignano and Gubbio. This gives you a specific sequence of starting point, direction and signposts for the drive to the Castello.
The Chiascio as a Common Thread
The river features in several different contexts: as part of the landscape depicted in the fresco, as a stretch of the Presepe vivente route and as the riverbank along the Petrignano Cross course. In the 2024 edition, this course was two kilometres long and was located in a park on the banks of the Chiascio in Petrignano di Assisi. The Presepe route links the lanes with the riverbanks; for the 2024 Cross edition, a specific course length is given. This allows you to consider the cultural performance and the sporting connection to the river as different reasons to visit.
