Monte Castello Di Vibio can be explored through a range of cultural and natural themes. The Teatro della Concordia represents theatre history, while two churches tell the story of 19th-century architecture; other highlights include the surviving Porta di Maggio town gate, sweeping views across the countryside and a hike in Parco Fluviale del Tevere. When planning your trip, you can distinguish between specific buildings, a viewpoint and a route with a set distance and duration.

Theatre and historic gates

The Teatro della Concordia opened in 1808 and is the world’s smallest active historic theatre. It has 99 seats, arranged in boxes and the stalls. The theatre offers a different focus from the churches: here, theatre history and seating arrangements shape the subject, while the churches are defined by their construction phases, floor plans and furnishings.

Porta di Maggio is the only surviving one of Monte Castello Di Vibio’s two historic town gates. As another type of historic structure, the gate complements the theatre and church buildings.

Church architecture and furnishings

The Chiesa di Santa Illuminata was completed in 1839 and built on the walls of a small predecessor church. The Chiesa dei Santi Filippo e Giacomo was built in 1851 on the site of an earlier, smaller church. The dates refer to different things: 1839 marks completion, while 1851 is the year of construction. So for the first church, the focus is on its completion; for the second, on its construction on the site of a smaller predecessor church.

The Chiesa dei Santi Filippo e Giacomo is designed in the Neoclassical style. It has a rectangular floor plan, and the interior is divided into three naves. The three naves are longitudinal sections of the church interior, making its layout easier to understand. Frescoes adorn the vaults, walls and pillars; they were painted by the Perugia-born artists Nicola Benvenuti and his brother Federico. The church also houses the silver so-called Braccio Santo, containing relics of Saints Filippo and Giacomo. Architecture, painting and the veneration of relics thus come together in one building.

Views and hiking

The terrace of Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II offers sweeping views across southern Italy as far as the mountains of Lazio and Abruzzo. The viewpoint provides a scenic perspective that differs from the specific buildings. If you are interested in both history and landscapes when planning your trip, these perspectives complement each other.

The Doglio–Monte Castello di Vibio section of Parco Fluviale del Tevere is a six-kilometre hike that takes two hours. Distance and duration answer two different planning questions: how long is the route, and how much time does the stated hike take? This makes it easy to plan the route as a separate time commitment alongside the cultural attractions.

The Banchetto Medievale

The “Banchetto Medievale” is a traditional walking feast held on the first Saturday after Ferragosto; music and jugglers accompany the meal in the town’s squares. Check the programme for the relevant year before your trip.
