For a trip to Colfiorito, you can consider nature, archaeology, remembrance and event dates as distinct areas of interest. The plateaus combine wetlands, forests, pastures and cultivated fields; museums and the memorial add the region’s history to these landscape themes. If you’re looking for a hotel for your trip, thinking about your personal interests can help you plan when to travel and what to focus on during your stay.

Plateaus and Wetland

Across its extensive plateaus and gently rolling terrain, Parco Regionale di Colfiorito brings together wetlands, forests, pastures and cultivated fields. Within these plateaus, Palude di Colfiorito stands out as the only area where water currently remains year-round. The wetland is included in the Ramsar Convention and designated by the European Community as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC). The landscape and its protected status give Palude a distinctive place among Colfiorito’s nature attractions.

At the edge of Palude is a birdwatching hide. From there, you may be able to spot rare or endangered species such as the Eurasian bittern, little bittern, purple heron and great reed warbler. These species illustrate the birdlife associated with this wetland; sightings are not guaranteed.

Archaeology and Natural History

The Archaeological Museum of Colfiorito preserves finds relating to the Plestini, an Umbrian people who settled in pre-Roman times on the karst plateaus of the Colfiorito Apennine plateau. Its chronologically and thematically arranged exhibition traces the history of the Plestini from their origins through to Romanization, using material from sanctuaries, tombs, settlements and towns. The timeline and the different contexts in which the finds were discovered are presented side by side. The museum houses around 1,450 artefacts documenting Plestinian civilization from its origins through to Romanization.

The Natural History Museum of Parco di Colfiorito has a different focus: it presents the geomorphological development, fossil features, and botanical, vegetation-related and fauna characteristics of the Plestini plateaus. It also includes an insect collection, a herbarium and a collection of stuffed birds representative of the park area, the Collezione Piscini. While the archaeological collection focuses on the cultural history of the Plestini, the Natural History Museum explores the natural features of the plateaus.

Remembrance and Long-Distance Walking Route

The Colfiorito Memorial commemorates the history of the monarchist-fascist concentration camp that operated there from 1939 to 1944. The memorial includes a photo-documentary exhibition and video testimonies from people interned by the regime. Alongside the long history of the Plestini, Colfiorito’s more recent history offers a distinct focus for travel and learning.

The Via Lauretana, a long-distance walking route, crosses Parco di Colfiorito. You can consider the route as a separate aspect of your plans alongside the museums and wetland; no walking time or specific route details are provided here.

Events and Travel Dates

The Mostra mercato e Sagra della Patata Rossa has been held every August in Colfiorito since 1977, promoting typical mountain products. The traditional Fiera di Plestia follows a different schedule: it takes place from May to September on the Monday after the first Sunday of the month. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages or earlier. If you’d like to plan your trip around either event, check the specific dates for your travel year.

The areas of interest differ clearly when choosing a focus for your trip: Palude and the birdwatching hide are all about wetlands and birdwatching, the two museums focus on natural history and archaeology, and the memorial on remembrance. The events also introduce specific date windows. These differences can help you plan your trip to Colfiorito and find a suitable hotel to match your interests.
