Lisciano Niccone lies in the valley of the Niccone stream. Two distinct interests are central to planning a trip here: exploring the landscape and visiting historic places. The trekking route, woods and Monte Castiglione offer specific points of interest for the first, while castle ruins, archaeological sites and a church with an altarpiece represent the second. This gives you the opportunity to decide which aspects of the destination you would like to shape your stay most.

Trekking route and Monte Castiglione

The Lisciano Niccone trekking route is about 6.5 kilometres long and has rest areas with benches along the way. It runs from Canutola via Belvedere and Corgna to the equipped park at Monte Castiglione. The route length and named stops provide specific points of reference for your planning, without indicating a walking time or level of difficulty.

Monte Castiglione Park lies at an altitude of 802 metres and covers eight hectares of pine forest. It offers an excellent view of Lake Trasimeno. The route and the park have different highlights: the route follows a path through several named places, while the park is a distinct landscape destination, with its elevation, pine forest and lake view.

Woodland and wildlife

The municipality’s north-facing woodland areas are mostly covered with downy oaks. Turkey oaks, chestnuts, hornbeams and beech trees are also found here. The wooded surroundings are home to wild boar, polecats, buzzards, tawny owls, jays, wood pigeons, wr ynecks, nuthatches, spectacled salamanders and Aesculapian snakes. The description of the natural environment thus covers both the different woodland types and tree species, and the wildlife that lives there.

History and archaeological sites

Castello di Lisciano Niccone was built around the 9th to 10th century on a hilltop east of and above the town. Today, only a few ruins of the old castle remain. Another historic site is Bellona: the fortified village developed on the summit of Monte Murlo. Archaeological finds from the Etruscan and Roman periods in the Lisciano Niccone area attest to very ancient settlements there.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, Lisciano Niccone became an important strategic point for passage through the Byzantine Corridor, one of the main connections between Rome and Ravenna. Archaeological traces, the development of the fortified village of Bellona and the history of the castle thus represent different historical contexts in the municipal area.

The history of art also includes the Chiesa di San Nicolò in Località Val di Rose, a hamlet of Crocicchie in the municipality of Lisciano Niccone. The church houses an altarpiece painted around 1515 by Eusebio di Jacopo di Cristoforo, known as da Sangiorgio, a pupil of Raphael. The rectangular floor plan and two side entrances leading to the sacristy are further architectural features. The Ipogeo is also located in the area, in Località Villa Sagraia.

Woodland and pastoral products

Local products from the woods and pastures include mushrooms and chestnuts, as well as meat from livestock farming. They also include natural cheeses made by shepherds who live in the area; these cheeses can be purchased locally. Local production thus complements the landscape and cultural highlights with a culinary perspective on the area.
