Tuoro sul Trasimeno combines traces of its history with a landscape of lake and hills. Located within the Parco regionale del Lago Trasimeno, the town is part of a protected area that also serves as a resting place for migratory birds. Excursion destinations include architectural and artistic landmarks, as well as trails through forests, pastureland and the area around the lake.

Discover History and Architecture

The Torre pendente di Vernazzano is one of the ruins of the old castle of Vernazzano. It is tilted at 13 degrees, and tie rods support the tower. From the hamlet of Vernazzano, a trail through the woods takes about 20 minutes to reach it. Vernazzano is approximately five kilometres from the town centre. Another way to explore the settlements and castle ruins on a circular route is the Vernazzano–Tuoro trail, which connects the various settlements of Vernazzano and Tuoro sul Trasimeno and passes by the ruins of the leaning tower.

The Pieve dei Confini also tells the story of earlier architectural styles: the church is an early Romanesque building dating from the 11th century. It has largely survived despite extensive later alterations. Historically, the pieve served travellers as a landmark and a safe place to stay or stop. This brings its former role for travellers into focus alongside its architecture.

In Tuoro, just outside the centre in the direction of Sanguineto, stands the Palazzo del Capra, also known as Palazzo di Nardo. It houses an important fresco by Pietro Vannucci, known as Perugino. According to local tradition, the palazzo was built over the mausoleum of the consul Gaius Flaminius. This account belongs to local tradition and should not be treated as an established fact.

Museums, Art and Remembrance of the Battle

The Museo su Annibale e la Battaglia del Trasimeno focuses on the Punic Wars, the Battle of Lake Trasimeno and the area where it took place. It explores these topics from historical, historiographical, iconographic and anthropological perspectives. Videos, panels, infographics, multimedia stations and 4D video reports present the battle interactively; some technical elements may change.

The Museo di Annibale al Trasimeno – Centro di documentazione is located at Piazza Garibaldi 7 in the historic centre. This is also the official starting point of the Percorso della Battaglia del Trasimeno. The route crosses the valley of Tuoro sul Trasimeno and passes all the places connected with the battle. One archaeological interpretation concerns the ustrina in the Tuoro area: some scholars believe these may have been burial structures used to cremate the many fallen after the battle.

Another work of art defines Campo del Sole: 27 column sculptures form a large spiral leading to a central slab bearing a sun symbol. The columns are made of local grey sandstone, known as “pietra serena,” and are about 4.5 metres high. The apse of Santa Maria Maddalena also contains a 1949 fresco by the Futurist painter Gerardo Dottori.

Trails Through the Landscape and Along the Lake

Visitors wishing to explore the area on foot can choose from a variety of routes. Trekking Trail 28 reaches Cima di Tuoro, also known as Gosparini, and passes through wooded slopes, across a panoramic terrace and through pastureland, with views of Lake Trasimeno. Punta Macerone is considered the main natural point of interest in the municipal area. At Malpasso, a pedestrian bridge provides access to the lake.

There is also a designated cycling route in the area: the Ciclovia del Trasimeno runs through Tuoro sul Trasimeno. The Borghetto–Tuoro section ends at the car park at Punta Navaccia. Hikers on a section of the Via del Trasimeno also reach Punta Navaccia; from there, they board a boat to continue to Isola Maggiore. The routes therefore differ in their destinations and means of travel, without assuming a particular walking or cycling time.

The Lido di Tuoro is located on the lakeshore at Punta Navaccia. It has a beach and tourist facilities; individual facilities may change. The Museo del Merletto on Isola Maggiore can also be reached by ferry from the Pontile di Tuoro sul Trasimeno landing stage. Check ferry connections and service information before travelling. This allows you to choose cultural attractions, trails and a trip to the island based on your specific route.
