Massa Martana brings together a historic town centre, Roman remains, museums and nature trails at the foot of the Monti Martani. If you are looking for a hotel in Massa Martana, first consider which themes you want to shape your stay: local and church history, archaeology or nature trails. The sights offer different points of focus and concrete guidance when choosing your destination.

Roman Traces and the Via Flaminia

The Catacomb of Villa San Faustino is in the hamlet of Grotta Traiana, in the Villa San Faustino district of the municipality of Massa Martana. It is close to the ancient route of the Via Flaminia and the Ponte Fonnaia. The bridge itself is a Roman road structure with a single arch: built in 220 BC from dressed travertine blocks, it carried the Via Flaminia over a small tributary of the Naia. Its construction, material and function make Ponte Fonnaia a vivid destination for anyone interested in ancient roads.

Visits to the catacomb and Ponte Fonnaia require booking at least two days in advance. Tours are offered in Italian and other languages; arrange your visit beforehand. This makes it possible to consider the catacomb and bridge as specific historical landmarks along the ancient road route.

Churches and the Fortified Town Centre

The historic centre of Massa Martana lies within the castle walls. Its well-preserved gateway is decorated with dressed stones and the town’s coat of arms. The Church of San Felice stands on the main square, which itself retains the features of a fortified centre. The present church building dates from the 15th and 16th centuries; its bell tower was built in 1637. The same square therefore brings together details of the town’s fortifications and the building history of a church.

The Church of Santa Maria in Pantano was built between the 7th and 8th centuries over an existing Roman structure. It is considered one of Umbria’s oldest and most interesting churches. Nearby is Vicus Martis Tudertium, an ancient Roman settlement. Excavations there have uncovered structures and finds from the Republican and Imperial periods. The two sites illustrate different historical layers: a later church built over a Roman structure and archaeological evidence of a settlement.

The historical roots of the Villa San Faustino area also go back a long way. The stone castle there is associated with the 10th and 11th centuries and is linked to the lands of the Arnolfi. The Abbey of San Faustino was built on a Roman settlement near Villa San Faustino, within the municipality. Another landmark in the history of the church is the old Abbey of Saints Fidenzio and Terenzio, dating from the 9th century. A Benedictine community lived in the nearby monastery and cared for the complex until the end of the 14th century.

Museums and Getting Your Bearings

The town museum “Spazio Martano: Storia e Territorio” comprises three sections spread across two different locations. The Antiquarium features an interactive multimedia area with maps, backlit information panels and touchscreens that let visitors explore archaeological sites digitally. Another facet is the Museo Italiano Presepi d'Arte, with more than forty works. A smartphone audio guide for Massa Martana is also available in Italian, English, Spanish, French and German.

The tourist office organises guided visits and trekking excursions by prior arrangement. If a guided tour or excursion is important to your plans, enquire in advance. This lets you treat the cultural sites and nature trails as different focal points of your stay.

Nature Trails and Getting There

Massa Martana stands on a rocky outcrop at the foot of the Monti Martani. The Martani Trekking routes run through the Monti Martani area and are equipped nature trails. One specific example of archaeological remains is the Castelliere di Monte Cerchio: dry-laid limestone forms circular rings there, about 2.8 to 3 metres thick and no more than one metre high.

A 1.6-kilometre, gently uphill trail leads from Le Troscignole del Pozzachiolo to the Castelliere di Monte Cerchio. The trail length and ascent give you specific information to help plan this hike.
