When planning a stay in San Giovanni Del Pantano, you can first decide what will be the focus of your trip: historic sites or trails for walking and cycling. The tomb, church art and described routes offer different ways to explore your interests.

Etruscan Tomb and Church Art

The Tomba del Faggeto is an Etruscan tomb on a hill near Monte Tezio, in the San Giovanni del Pantano area. It is an open-air site and is not accessible to people with mobility impairments. You should take this limitation into account when planning your visit. The tomb also has a specific architectural feature: its stone closing slab is 11 centimetres thick. Two surviving conical pivots allow it to turn.

The parish church of San Giovanni del Pantano is dedicated to John the Baptist and dates back to the 13th century. It has been mentioned as a member of Monte Corona Abbey since the mid-14th century. Above the apse are frescoes created in 1948 by Gerardo Dottori, a Futurist painter from Perugia. The tomb and church thus offer different ways to explore history: the design of an Etruscan tomb in one case, and the development of a parish church and its art in the other.

Castles and Defensive Architecture

Castello di Antognolla lies on the northern slopes of Monte Tezio. The first surviving records of Antognolla date to 1174; they mention a Benedictine monastery there dedicated to Saint Peter. The dating of Torre Gualterotta should be treated with caution: it was probably built around the 14th century for defensive purposes and to control the road linking Cortona with Perugia and Umbertide.

At Castello del Bisciaro, one corner has a round, battlemented tower, with arched machicolations below it. The original structure is thought to have consisted of a massive rectangular tower measuring 6.00 × 9.30 metres. These details distinguish two aspects of the architecture: the visible form of the corner tower and the uncertain reconstruction of the original building. Along with the probable dating of Torre Gualterotta, they give an impression of different forms of defensive architecture, without assigning all the structures to the same period.

Walking and Cycling Routes

Route 24 starts in San Giovanni del Pantano and heads towards Pian di Nese. It offers views of the hills towards Perugia and Lake Trasimeno, then enters a forest of oaks, maples, manna ash and hornbeams. Its description thus combines two contrasting landscape impressions: distant views and wooded stretches. Check trail conditions locally before setting out.

The route to the Tomba del Faggeto also starts in San Giovanni del Pantano and is 13 kilometres long. The Monte Acuto route starts here as well. Conditions on the routes to the Tomba and Monte Acuto may have changed. So check the current situation before setting out on either route.

For cyclists, MTB 10 is a moderately difficult mountain bike and e-bike route covering 25 kilometres. The details highlight different aspects: the route to the Tomba leads to a historic destination and gives its length; MTB 10 also specifies the type of bike and difficulty level. When planning your trip, you can therefore decide whether a particular destination or a graded cycling route is more important to you.
