Castelluccio – Hiking, plateau and nature
Accommodation in Castelluccio
Castelluccio combines its location on a plateau with hiking trails, karst landscapes and a distinctive historic village setting. Castelluccio di Norcia lies on the Piani di Castelluccio and within Monti Sibillini National Park. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between possible priorities: a longer hike, experiencing the plateau and its wildlife, or learning about the village’s history and agriculture. This will help you assess Castelluccio in light of what you would like to experience on your trip.
Plateau, karst and nature
The Piani di Castelluccio is a karst and alluvial plateau in the Umbrian-Marche Apennines. Its geological features include karst sinkholes known as Mergani, which channel rainwater into underground aquifers. A trip to Fosso dei Mergani follows park trail 556 from a road near the bend before the climb to the pass, leading to the sinkhole and then back to the starting point.
Macchia Cavaliera reveals another side of the landscape: a section of beech forest has been preserved there, providing refuge for several animal species, including wolves. The plateau, karst formations and forest offer different points of interest for nature lovers, so the area cannot be reduced to a single type of landscape.
Monti Sibillini National Park has no fences or entrance gates. Visiting the park area requires no ticket, fee or reservation. Nevertheless, check for current local restrictions before your trip.
Hiking and activities
The official “Upon the Vanished Lake” hiking trail starts and ends in Castelluccio and crosses the Pian Grande. It is 21.9 kilometres long, takes about six hours to walk and is rated E – Hiking. These details provide a concrete basis for planning the route. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out.
The range of activities on the Castelluccio Plateau goes beyond hiking: options include excursions, trekking—including with mules—mountain biking, birdwatching, rafting, hang gliding and paragliding. Mule treks follow old pack trails; check whether this activity is available before your trip. Volo libero offers tourist tandem flights on hang gliders or paragliders accompanied by instructors. Flight availability and conditions may vary.
Another seasonal highlight is the Fioritura, which takes place from late May to mid-July; the exact timing varies from year to year. If this natural phenomenon is a deciding factor for your trip, plan around the seasonal period and bear in mind that it varies from year to year.
Village setting, tradition and history
Castelluccio’s old houses form a concentric settlement that developed along an important pastoral transhumance route. This connection between the village and pastoral farming is also reflected in local agriculture: farmers traditionally grow lentils without using pesticides and allow other spontaneously growing plant species to grow between the fields.
The Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Castelluccio dates from the 16th century. La Torraccia consists of the ruins of the Torre Nuova, also known as the Torre di Cavaliera. The tower was probably built in the second half of the 14th century; from this strategic point, the surrounding area could be effectively controlled. The church and the tower ruins thus represent different aspects of local history: religious architecture and strategic importance.
