Discover Foligno
Accommodation in Foligno
Foligno brings together art and history with a clear focus on getting around the city and its events. Its standout cultural highlights include the Late Gothic Palazzo Trinci, several distinct museum collections and the Giostra della Quintana. The nature and archaeology of Colfiorito offer their own attractions, too. You can plan your stay around specific interests, from historical collections to paths through the wetland.
Getting around the city
The present-day urban area of Foligno has a distinctive elliptical, oval shape. Its focal point is Piazza della Repubblica, where the cathedral and the Duomo stand opposite each other. The piazza provides a clear reference point for getting to know the layout of the city.
An urban walking route starts at the train station and leads through Porta Romana into the historic centre. If you want to explore Foligno on foot, you can plan to use this route to connect the station and the centre. No walking time or route length is given, so the main consideration for planning your day is the route described.
Palazzo Trinci and the museum collections
Palazzo Trinci is one of the most important Late Gothic secular buildings in central Italy. Its museum complex comprises four institutions: the Pinacoteca, the Museo Archeologico, the Museo dell’Istituzione Comunale and the Museo Multimediale dei Tornei, delle Giostre e dei Giochi. Their names indicate different ways to explore art, archaeology, municipal history, and tournaments, games and festivals.
The Museo Archeologico in Palazzo Trinci displays finds dating from the 7th or 6th century BC to the 3rd century AD. This timespan gives the visit an archaeological context that extends from antiquity into the Roman period. The Museo della Stampa offers a different focus: it is housed in the old Palazzo Orfini and preserves evidence of papermaking and publishing in Foligno from the 15th century to the present day.
One particularly well-dated item in the Museo della Stampa collection is a printed page from Dante’s Commedia dating to 1472. It depicts Canto XI of Paradiso. The Museo Capitolare Diocesano adds to the museum offerings with around 40 works, including two busts from the workshop of Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The recently restored Cripta di San Feliciano is also part of the museum visit.
Colfiorito: wetland, trails and archaeology
The Palude di Colfiorito is a wetland where water remains throughout the year. It is protected as a regional park, a Ramsar site and a European Special Area of Conservation (SAC). In the Parco Regionale di Colfiorito, visitors can hike on numerous trails and go mountain biking; birdwatching and nature photography are also possible activities there. The combination of a permanent wetland and a range of outdoor interests makes the park a distinct focus for travel planning.
The Museo Archeologico di Colfiorito covers the history of the Plestini from their origins to Romanization. The exhibition draws on materials from sanctuaries, tombs, settlements and cities. The Plestini were an Umbrian people who settled in pre-Roman times on the karst plateaus of the Apennine upland of Colfiorito. This gives the archaeology here a clearly defined cultural context, distinct from the collections at Palazzo Trinci.
Giostra della Quintana and culinary events
The Giostra della Quintana is a historical reenactment of a 17th-century jousting tournament, first established in 1946. At the event, Foligno’s ten districts compete against one another at Campo de li Giochi. During the Quintana, the taverns of the ten districts in the historic centre serve traditional Umbrian dishes and local wines. The tournament and the taverns give the event both a sporting and a culinary dimension.
Another culinary highlight is I Primi d’Italia, a festival in Foligno featuring tastings, cooking classes, culinary demonstrations and a food market. If one of these events is a deciding factor in your trip, check the dates in advance. This will help you coordinate your event plans with the other cultural and nature-related interests of your stay.
